The Arizona Diamondbacks and Seattle Mariners are reportedly in agreement on a trade to send first baseman Josh Naylor to Seattle for pitching prospects Brandyn Garcia and Ashton Izzi. Naylor, 28, was a first-round pick (12th overall) of the Miami Marlins in the 2015 MLB June Amateur Draft. The left-handed first baseman broke out in 2024 with the Cleveland Guardians, becoming a first-time All-Star while smashing 31 homers, knocking in 108 RBI, and slashing .243/.320/.456 with an OPS of .776 (118 OPS+). The Diamondbacks originally acquired Naylor from the Guardians this past offseason for right-hander Slade Cecconi and their Competitive Balance Round B Draft Pick.
This season, Naylor has played well, especially considering that he moved from the American League to the National League. It must be difficult for a player moving from a league where he knows many of the pitchers to a league where he doesn’t know many of the pitchers. It hasn’t been much of an issue for Naylor, however, as he’s slashing .292/.360/.447 with an OPS of .807 (124 OPS+), 11 homers, 59 RBI, 11 stolen bases, 19 doubles, and a triple. So he hasn’t quite had the pop he had in 2024, but the average and RBI ability are there. Additionally, he already has more stolen bases in 2025 than in any other season of his career.
The Mariners’ Price for the Josh Naylor Trade
Brandyn Garcia, 25, is an 11th-round pick of the Mariners in the 2023 June Amateur Draft. The lefty made two relief appearances for the Mariners in 2025. In those two appearances, he finished one game and allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits and three walks while striking out one. In the minors, Garcia amassed an ERA of 2.49 while striking out 184 batters (10.4 K/9) and walking 67 (3.8 BB/9) in 159 1/3 innings with a 1.243 WHIP. He started 25 games in the minors but also finished 24 games out of his 68 total appearances. The 25 starts all came in 2024, while 21 of his 24 games finished came in 2025 (five saves). In the minors, he had a 2.48 ERA in 2024 (High-A/Double-A) and a 4.59 ERA in 2025 (Double-A/Triple-A).
Ashton Izzi, 21, is a fourth-round pick of the Mariners in the 2022 MLB June Amateur Draft. He’s a right-handed starter, currently at High-A Everett. Contrary to Garcia, all 47 of Izzi’s appearances in the minors have been starts. His ERA and hits per nine innings have been all around the map in his three seasons in the minors, but his strikeouts have been improving steadily year after year. Overall in the minors, he’s amassed a 4.13 ERA while striking out 162 batters in 176 1/3 innings (8.3 K/9) with a 1.509 WHIP. This season, he has an ERA of 5.51 with 54 strikeouts in 47 1/3 innings (10.3 K/9) and a 1.563 WHIP in 12 starts.
Who Won the Trade?
The Diamondbacks obtained a couple of the Mariners’ top 16 prospects (Garcia 13, Izzi 16) and the Mariners receive an experienced first baseman who has shown some pop and the ability to maintain an excellent batting average. In a few years, we’ll know the full impact of this trade, but until then, the Mariners are making out well– at least for the remainder of 2025. It’ll be interesting to see if the Mariners decide to re-sign Josh Naylor after this trade. If they don’t, then they’ve given up two good pitching prospects for the rental of a good first baseman. On the other side, the Diamondbacks need to continue to develop the prospects for them to make an impact at the major league level.
