The New York Yankees were able to salvage the finale versus the Boston Red Sox 7-2. It was a rough series, but the Yankees salvaged the series finale with the Red Sox, thanks to letting the long ball fly and the bullpen holding down the fort.
What Went Right for the Yankees
The Long Ball
Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Trent Grisham hit multiple home runs tonight. The Bronx Bombers continue to rely on home runs as the catalyst in their victories, as was the case tonight. Chisholm and Grisham continue banner power years with matching or setting new career highs in home runs this year.
Yankees Bullpen Pitches a Shutout
The Yankee bullpen shut it down tonight. A sight for sore eyes in Yankeeland as the bullpen, despite some big additions at the deadline, has been an issue of late for the Yankees. It was the players the Yankees needed to get going who pitched well tonight in Luke Weaver, Devin Williams, and Camilo Doval.
Giancarlo Stanton’s Amazing Season Continues
Giancarlo Stanton has been on a tear lately and continued that with a 2-for-3 performance tonight. Ever since coming back from the injured list, Stanton has been the Yankees’ best hitter, even over Aaron Judge. Stanton has been a blessing for the Yankees, especially of late, playing in the outfield for the first time in years, allowing both his and Judge’s bat to stay in the lineup. Stanton has played outfield without missing a beat at the plate.
What Went Wrong for the Yankees
Yankees Still Lost the Series
While the Yankees did manage to win tonight, they still lost ground over the weekend as they entered ahead of the Red Sox and exited it behind them in the AL East standings. Not to mention losing a game to the Toronto Blue Jays for the division lead as well.
Aaron Judge Continues to Struggle
Aaron Judge has not been the same player since the All-Star Break. Even before his injury, the Yankee captain was scuffling at the dish. Over his last 30 games, Judge is hitting .212 with 7 home runs and 18 RBI. This is a far cry from his over .330 average before the break, not to mention a power outage and uptick in his strikeout rate.
Up Next for the Yankees
The Yankees will open up a three-game set at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx against the lowly Washington Nationals. This is a series the Yankees need to sweep with no excuses. The first game is set for Monday at 7:05 Eastern, and the pitching matchup is expected to be Brad Lord, who is 4-6 with a 3.46 ERA for the Nationals, against the young gun Cam Schlitter, who is 1-2 with a 3.22 ERA for the Yankees.
