The New York Mets shut down Tylor Megill temporarily and, in a subsequent move, placed catcher Luis Torrens on the 10-day injured list.
With Torrens out of action, the Mets recalled Hayden Senger from the Triple-A Syracuse Mets.
Mets Shut Down Megill After He Experienced Tightness
While answering questions from reporters before Monday’s game against the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park, Carlos Mendoza claimed Megill experienced tightness when throwing secondary pitches.
“He’s back in New York getting imaging, and he’s shut down from throwing,” the Mets manager said. “We’re waiting to see what we’re dealing with.”
Megill, the fourth-year starting pitcher, hasn’t been seen on the diamond since June 14, when the Mets lost to the Tampa Bay Rays 8-4. According to SNY, he has been sidelined with a right elbow sprain and has been rehabilitating between Double-A and Triple-A for the last month.
With 19 games remaining in the regular season, Mendoza said the team is “running out of time” on Megill’s return.
“So again I don’t want to speculate here, but the fact that he’s getting another MRI and where we’re at, like I said, it feels like we’re running out of time,” he added.
In 68 innings, Megill is 5-5 with his last win being a 13-5 triumph over the Colorado Rockies. The 30-year-old right-handed pitcher has a 3.95 ERA and 89 strikeouts. However, he surrendered 60 hits, 37 runs, and six home runs. Since the Mets shut down Megill, they turned to rookies Nolan McLean, Jonah Tong, and Brandon Sproat to rejuvenate their bullpen.
Torrens Doesn’t Think He’ll Be Out For Long
Torrens, the Mets catcher, spoke to reporters after being placed on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm contusion. He claimed the injury occurred during Saturday’s game against the Cincinnati Reds when he went to block a ball.
“It’s a matter of pain tolerance, and right now there’s a lot of pain,” he added. “At the same time, this has been the season I feel like I’ve played the most. I’ve been more exposed to it.”
Torrens, who is in the midst of his eighth season in the majors, has appeared 87 times. In 244 plate appearances, he has 55 hits, 18 runs, five home runs, and 29 RBI. Torrens doesn’t expect to be out of action for too long and expects to be out for no more than “a few days.” In the meantime, Senger will rejoin the starting lineup.
Senger, 28, has played in 30 games. As a rookie, he collected 12 hits, seven runs, and four RBI. His strongest performance came against the Atlanta Braves in August, when he recorded two hits and three RBI.
Mets Have a Four-Game Stretch Against Philadelphia
New York will face off against Philadelphia from Monday to Thursday. The Mets swept the Phillies last time they played a three-game series.
But this time, things can change, as New York has lost five of its last nine games. Philadelphia has won four of its last six and has a seven-game lead over New York for the top spot in the NL East.
With Megill shutdown and Torrens out of action, the Mets will need a strong performance from McLean in Monday’s game against Philadelphia.
