Mets 9, Cubs 7
The New York Mets rallied to a five-run comeback to defeat the Chicago Cubs 9-7 on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.
Relief pitcher Edwin Diaz sealed the Mets’ 81st win of the season by striking out five in two innings.
Cubs Score Five Early
Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor hit a lead-off solo home run during the first that went down as his 29th of the year. Starting pitcher David Peterson then allowed Nico Hoerner to hit a single before walking Carson Kelly.
Both runners were scored by a two RBI double by Carlos Santana. Peterson then walked Justin Turner and gave up a single to Matt Shaw. Hoerner hit an RBI single to score Turner, before Ian Happ hit a two RBI double to score Hoerner and Shaw.
Peterson was pulled during the second inning after surrendering five hits, five runs, and two walks.
Mets Make Five-Run Comeback
Pete Crow-Armstrong hit a single in the fourth inning before being scored on a throwing error by Jeff McNeil. This made the score 6-1 in favor of the Cubs.
Starling Marte responded with a single in the fifth before Francisco Alvarez hit a force out. Lindor started the Mets’ five-run comeback by scoring Marte on a groundout before Juan Soto reached base on a walk. Pete Alonso hit an RBI single to score Alvarez. Outfielder Brandon Nimmo tied the game at 6-6 with a three-run home run that scored Alonso and Soto, which completed their five-run comeback.
McNeil hit a double to right field in the sixth before Lindor hit an RBI single to score him. This gave the Mets their first lead since the top of the first, 7-6.
Hoerner hit a single during the sixth before Seiya Suzuki hit an RBI single to score his teammate and tie the game at seven.
Brett Baty hit a single in the eighth before being replaced by pinch-hitter Luisangel Acuna. Alvarez then hit a two-run home run to score Acuna and give the Mets a 9-7 lead.
What Went Right for the Mets
Diaz, the relief pitcher, came in during the eighth and recorded three consecutive outs. He then recorded three more strikeouts during the ninth inning.
The Mets’ lineup ended the ballgame with 11 hits and nine RBI. Lindor ended with three RBI, Nimmo had three, Alvarez had two, and Alonso had one.
What Went Wrong for the Mets
Peterson, the starting pitcher, gave up five runs across the first two innings. Huascar Brazoban and Gregory Soto each gave up a run.
Looking Ahead
The Mets can claim the series if they defeat the Cubs on Tuesday or Wednesday. Tuesday’s game is at 8:05 p.m. Eastern on ESPN. Rookie righty Jonah Tong takes the mound for the Mets while Matthew Boyd toes the rubber for the Cubs.
