Blue Jays 5, Yankees 2

One night after exploding for nine runs, the Yankee offense mustered only two in a 5-2 loss against the Toronto Blue Jays on Wednesday night. This ended their 2025 season and gave the Blue Jays their first ALDS win since 2016.

Guerrero Strikes Again in First Inning

Already with eight RBI in the series, Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. showed his face again versus Yankee starter Cam Schlittler. After a George Springer double, Guerrero lined a single into right field to score him and put Toronto up 1-0.

With New York down 1-0 in the third inning, Yankee third baseman Ryan McMahon answered the call, launching a solo home run into Yankee Stadium’s short porch. This was McMahon’s first postseason home run in his nine-year MLB career.

Following back-to-back no-out base hits in the fifth inning, George Springer lifted a fly ball into deep center field. This allowed Ernie Clement to score, giving Toronto a 2-1 advantage.

Toronto Adds Insurance

In the seventh inning, Nathan Lukes lined a two-RBI single over the head of Yankee shortstop Anthony Volpe, extending the Blue Jays’ lead to three runs. One inning later, Myles Straw blooped an RBI single into shallow right field to put Toronto in front 5-1.

After their starters struggled mightily in the first three games of the series, Cam Schlittler responded with a strong outing, allowing two earned runs in over six innings. In two postseason starts, Schlittler posted an ERA of 1.26 while striking out 14 batters.

The Yankee offense was dormant in Game Four, tallying two runs on six hits. Four of the Yankees’ nine hitters went without a hit, with both Trent Grisham and Anthony Volpe striking out multiple times. The Yankee bullpen also struggled in Game Four, especially Camilo Doval.

Manager Reactions

After losing in four games, Aaron Boone offered a clear rationale for his team’s shortcomings. “They beat us this series,” said Boone postgame. “Simple as that.”

Once Toronto punched its ticket to the ALCS, Blue Jays manager John Schneider praised his team while looking towards Sunday. “I’m just really proud,” said Schneider postgame. “We’ve got a lot more work to do.”

Next Matchup

After winning the ALDS 3-1, the Blue Jays will play in the ALCS Sunday night against the winner of Thursday’s game between the Seattle Mariners and the Detroit Tigers. The Yankees will now turn their heads to the offseason, one littered with questions.
