After moving on from Brandon Nimmo this offseason, the New York Mets have a gap to fill in the outfield. A recent report suggests that they are looking to trade for Luis Robert Jr. of the Chicago White Sox. If a deal is made for the veteran outfielder, it would likely involve younger talent that the White Sox have been seeking. The Mets can meet the criteria if they are willing to trade two of their youngest players.
Luis Robert Jr.
In six seasons with the White Sox, Luis Robert Jr. has shown significant upside. He had a breakout year in 2023, where he hit 38 home runs, 80 RBI and 36 doubles, which earned him a Silver Slugger.
That season, he had a .264 batting average and made his only All-Star appearance. Robert, however, did regress on offense after that year. In 2024, he hit 14 home runs, 35 RBI and 19 doubles. In the 2025 season, he hit 14 home runs, 53 RBI and 12 doubles. His regression can be concerning for the Mets if they are willing to trade for him. However, the Mets are looking to make a push for the playoffs and can benefit from Robert’s defense, which helped him win a Rawlings Gold Glove in 2020.
A Beneficial Trade Package
According to Bob Nightengale of USA Today, the White Sox are looking to trade Robert. They want to receive pitching help in return. The Mets are in consideration because they can meet the criteria. A potential trade would involve sending reliever Dylan Ross and second baseman Luisangel Acuna.
Ross, 25, has yet to make his major league debut but was added to the Mets bullpen in September. In two minor league seasons, he went 2-0 with 80 strikeouts in 54 innings (13.3 K/9). Last season, he had a 2.17 ERA combined in High-A, Double-A, and Triple-A. Acuna, meanwhile, has made a name for himself in his short major league career. The Mets use the 22-year-old primarily as a utility player and pinch runner. In 95 appearances, he stole 16 bases and walked 13 times. He hit eight RBI and seven doubles in 175 at-bats. He showed a little pop as well, hitting three home runs the season prior.
If the Mets trade Ross and Acuna to the White Sox for Robert, this will meet both teams’ needs. Rober will slot into the outfield alongside Juan Soto. Ross can add depth to the White Sox bullpen. Acuna, meanwhile, can help their lineup with base running and pinch-hitting. A trade for Robert can be made sooner rather than later if both teams can arrange a deal.
