The New York Mets added depth to their bullpen 11 days before spring training starts, obtaining  lefty Bryan Hudson from the Chicago White Sox. The Mets sent cash considerations to the White Sox to complete the deal.

In a corresponding decision, Reed Garrett was placed on the 60-day injured list. The righty reliever is still recovering from Tommy John surgery and will miss the entire upcoming campaign.

What Does Bryan Hudson Bring

Selected by the Chicago Cubs in the third round of the 2015 draft, Bryan Hudson spent eight seasons in the minor leagues. He didn’t make his major league debut until joining the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2023. His career got off to an unsuccessful start with a 7.27 ERA in six appearances.

Hudson began a new chapter in his career when he pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2024. In 43 games, he went 6–1 with 62 strikeouts on a 1.73 ERA. That season, the Brewers reached the postseason, only to be eliminated by the Mets in the National League Wild Card round.

Bryan Hudson’s career declined once again when he got off to a forgetful start. The Brewers put him on waivers, but the White Sox claimed him in August. But he continued to struggle out of the bullpen with a 5.79 ERA. At 28, he will look to turn the page once more in Queens.

For the Mets, Bryan Hudson provides them with an opportunity to add depth to their bullpen at a minimal cost. He will join new additions Tobias Myers, Luke Weaver and Devin Williams. The trade comes after the club traded for righty Freddy Peralta from the Brewers.

Garrett Placed on 60-Day IL

The 33-year-old right–hander underwent surgery to reconstruct his UCL after the season ended in October. He supported the bullpen across the past three seasons, going 12–11 overall with a 4.10 ERA. Last year, Garrett had a 3–6 record with a 3.90 ERA in 58 appearances.
