The Boston Red Sox made a late bullpen addition on Thursday, picking up Danny Coulombe on a one-year deal worth $1 million. Coulombe has a 2.64 ERA over the last five seasons, with sub-3.00 ERA’s in the last four years. Although never in the closer role, he has been one of the majors elite relievers over the last decade.
Long Road to the Show
A 17th-round draft pick in 2008 to the Los Angeles Dodgers, he spent six years in the minors before making his debut in the majors in 2014. Through six seasons with the Dodgers and Oakland Athletics, he had a 4.27 ERA. It wasn’t until he made his way to the Minnesota Twins for the Covid-shortened 2020 season where he found his groove. After a three-year stint from 2020-2022, he signed a two-year deal with the Baltimore Orioles. He made his way back to the Twins for 2025, where he had his best stuff as a major leaguer.
Coulombe’s 2025
In 39 relief appearances before getting traded to the Texas Rangers, he had a 1.16 ERA. He also had 36 scoreless outings while boasting a 24.8% strikeout percentage while walking 7.7% of batters. He also was pretty clutch when inheriting runners, only allowing four of the 24 runners he inherited to score. Texas, unfortunately, was quite the setback, as his ERA with the Rangers jumped to 5.25 over 12 innings. Although his strikeout percentage only dipped to 22.5%, his walk rate more than doubled to 16.7%. As far as inherited runners went, he allowed two of the eight to score.
Looking Ahead
Coulombe served as the replacement for Justin Wilson, another veteran lefty reliever who was a key setup guy for the Red Sox in 2025. He won’t be asked to close games. That’s Aroldis Chapman‘s job, obviously. Adding him to a bullpen with Chapman, Garrett Whitlock and Greg Weissert should work well for the Red Sox.
