All-Star outfielder Juan Soto revealed that he avoided a serious injury to his calf ahead of the New York Mets’ next homestead. He was evaluated over the weekend, but will be re-evaluated when the team returns to Citi Field on Tuesday. For now, his injury is listed as day-to-day with a potential stint on the Injury List.
“Will give it 48 to 72 hours, see how it continues to progress,” manager Carlos Mendoza said. “I was surprised when I saw the way he was moving around, but calf injuries are tricky. We’ll wait and continue to call it day-to-day until we have to make a decision.”
Plenty of Replacements
The Mets will have to be careful to ensure Juan Soto fully recovers from this injury. Being out of action is something he’s not used to, considering he’s played in 150 or more games in every full season since 2019. Additionally, Soto got off to an impressive start to his second season in Queen, batting .355/.412/.516 with one home run and five RBI.
However, if Juan Soto is to miss time this season, then the Mets have options. Tyrone Taylor hit a home run and scored four runs in place of his teammate. Optionally, the Mets can also move Carson Benge or Brett Baty to left field until Soto is ready to return. This will provide Mark Vientos with an opportunity to start in the infield.

Baty missed the Mets’ last game against the San Francisco Giants due to a jammed thumb. Jared Young took over for him in that game. But Mendoza said Baty will be ready to play again soon.
“He was able to finish the game, a little sore afterward,” Mendoza said of Baty’s thumb. “We’re just trying to be smart about it, and that’s why he came out of the lineup.”
