Phillies 4, Braves 3
Alec Bohm kept the Philadelphia Phillies season alive with a 10th inning solo home run in a come from behind 4-3 win over the Atlanta Braves in Game Two of the NL Wild Card Round. After a loss in the series opener, Bohm crushed a 357-foot shot to give his team the lead on Wednesday at Truist Park in Atlanta. He wasn’t the only member of his team to rise to the occasion as Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper hit back-back solo home runs to tie the game in the eighth.
Their performance came as left-hander Christopher Sanchez lasted six-plus innings with six strikeouts. Right-hander Andrew Painter sealed the win with three strikeouts across the final three innings.
Tied after Six
The Phillies took a 1-0 lead in the first inning due to a Trea Turner double and RBI single from Harper. Bohm lined a single of his own, but right-hander Tyler Mahle struck out Brandon Marsh to end the frame. In the bottom half of the inning, Sanchez walked Ronald Acuña Jr., who swiped second and third. As the left-hander settled in, a Matt Olson RBI single tied the game at 1-1.
Across the next four innings, Mahle recorded four strikeouts while giving up three hits. Sanchez also performed well, tallying three strikeouts and issuing a free pass to Ha-Seong Kim. However, in the bottom of the fifth, Sean Murphy doubled off the lefty before a Kim popout and an intentional walk of Acuña. But Sanchez escaped the two-on jam, inducing a Drake Baldwin groundout for the third out.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Ozzie Albies and Mauricio Dubon singled off Sanchez. Austin Riley hit another, which loaded the bases for the Braves. However, even with momentum on their side, the Braves failed to score, as a groundball double play ended the inning.
Clawing Back
Mahle’s start ended after the seventh when he retired the side in order. Sanchez, on the other hand, was challenged in the bottom half of the inning. The left-hander walked Murphy, who reached second after Kim bunted. Baldwin hit an RBI double to right that fell out of Harper’s glove to put the Braves ahead. Olson hit a deep sacrifice fly to give the Braves a 3-1 lead. Ultimately, Sanchez’s outing came to an end after six-plus innings.
With their backs against the wall in the eighth, Schwarber and Harper hit back-back solo home runs off left-hander Dylan Lee to erase the deficit. Schwarber’s solo shot traveled 447 feet to right-center field while Harper’s went 418 feet to the same spot.
Edmundo Sosa singled off Raisel Iglesias to start the ninth but exited the game due to injury. Not long after, the Braves replaced Iglesias with right-hander Didier Fuentes, who threw only one pitch as a fly out ended the frame. The Braves failed to score in the bottom half of the inning, which sent the game into extra innings.
Sealing the Win
Fuentes struck out Harper swinging to start the 10th. As it seemed as if the inning was going to end without a score, Bohm crushed a solo home run off Fuentes to put the Phillies in the lead. Bryson Stott and Bryan De La Cruz followed with singles, but Fuentes struck out Derek Hill to end the inning.
Painter, who made it through the eighth and ninth without giving up a run, struck out Olson to start the bottom half of the inning. Still, Dubon singled off the right-hander, who also struck out Riley swinging. With a runner on first, Michael Harris II extended the game with a shallow single to the avail of Painter striking out Dominic Smith after a successful ABS challenge.
What Went Right for the Phillies
Bohm’s clutch solo shot extended the series and keeps the Phillies season alive. He went 2-for-4 with an RBI. Harper scored two RBI with the homer in the eighth before Schwarber went yard. Overall, the Phillies recorded 12 hits, four RBI and three home runs.
Sanchez went six-plus innings with six strikeouts. He performed well from the second to the fifth inning. Painter sealed the come from behind win with three strikeouts across three scoreless innings.
What Went Wrong for the Phillies
Harper dropped a fly ball that touched his glove in the seventh that went down as an RBI double for Baldwin. Sanchez struggled with his control, allowing six hits, five earned runs and three earned runs.
What Went Right for the Braves
Olson hit an RBI single to score his team’s first run in the first. The veteran infielder scored another run on a sacrifice fly. Baldwin went 2-for-5 with an RBI double in the seventh.
Mahle lasted seven innings with six strikeouts. He was in control for most of the afternoon, allowing only six hits and an earned run. Iglesias and Fuentes combined for two strikeouts across two innings.
