Rockies: Ryan McMahon on His First All-Star Game Nod
ARLINGTON, Tex. — Colorado Rockies third baseman Ryan McMahon has had an incredible year in 2024. It began with the birth of his first child, a daughter, in February. It continued with his heroics at the home opener. And now, for the first time in his major league career, it has made him an All-Star.
Learning the News
The video of Ryan McMahon learning the news from manager Bud Black hit X (formerly Twitter) soon after the All-Star roster announcement and has over 78,000 views. Black announced it to the entire team in the clubhouse after a long introduction. When he said McMahon’s name, the room erupted in cheers.

McMahon said he felt “the video did a good job showing how excited the boys (his teammates) were for me, and honestly, man, that meant the most to me.” In the background toward the end, shortly before Black revealed McMahon’s name, McMahon can be spotted with a look on his face as if he suspected it. McMahon said, “When he started saying certain things—like, I knew most of those guys hadn’t been there for 11 years. So as soon as he dropped that one, I was like, ‘Alright. I think it’s me.’”
The way McMahon described his emotions immediately upon learning the news was, “Try not to choke up while hugging my boys (teammates). We grind through everything together, so it was a special moment. But I was excited. I felt like we had a couple of other guys who should be here, but I think they were extremely excited as well.”
Ryan McMahon and the All-Star Festivities
McMahon said Monday that the biggest surprise for him at the time was “how friendly all the dudes are getting on the bus.” He added, “Everybody (was) dapping each other up. I think it’s cool. There’s a lot of respect here.”
His parents, in-laws, wife, and daughter are in Arlington with him. Tuesday afternoon, McMahon, his wife, and their daughter did the Red Carpet event. Monday afternoon, McMahon said he hoped his daughter wouldn’t “drool or start crying.” (Epilogue: She didn’t.)
A Life of Baseball
Ryan McMahon is the son of a baseball coach, so his baseball playing days began as a four-year-old in tee ball. But the All-Star Game wasn’t something he had dreamt about. “The things I dreamed of, the things I remembered were the bases loaded, walk-off grand slam—stuff like that. This is just a cool perk that comes with it.”
Since McMahon ended the Rockies 2024 home opener with a walk-off grand slam, he wiped both out in a 15-week span. And the added perk will culminate in his appearance in the 2024 All-Star Game Tuesday night. What a year for McMahon, indeed, and it is barely halfway over.
