Rangers 7, Diamondbacks 6 (10 Innings)
ARLINGTON, Texas (Aug 11) — The Texas Rangers rode a walk-off hit by Jake Burger in the 10th inning to beat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 7–6, Monday night. Sound had feel as Burger’s hit sent the crowd of 25,781 home extremely happy. The Rangers will go for the series win in this 2023 World Series rematch Tuesday with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm Central at Globe Life Field. Righty Anthony DeSclafani (1–2, 4.20 ERA) will get the ball for the Diamondbacks, while Jack Leiter (7–6, 4.05 ERA) will toe the rubber for the Rangers.
Snakes in Their Boots
The Rangers were caught off balance early Monday evening. The Diamondbacks scored first in the top of the second against right-hander Nathan Eovaldi. With two out in the inning, Tyler Locklear hit a solo shot to left, his second of the season.
They stretched it to 3–0 in the top of the third. Jake McCarthy led off with a double to left, his fourth of the year. Up next was Corbin Carroll, who blasted a two-run homer to right, his 26th of the season.
Ketel Marte followed with a hit-by-pitch. Moments later, Geraldo Perdomo joined the chat with a two-run shot to right, making it 5–0 Diamondbacks.
The Rangers got one back in the bottom of the third off right-hander Ryne Nelson.
Josh Jung opened the frame with a double to center, his 11th of the year. Three batters later, Corey Seager, on his bobblehead night, drove in Jung with a double to right.
The Diamondbacks extended their lead to 6–1 in the top of the sixth with reliever Jon Gray on the mound.
After Alek Thomas flied to right, Blaze Alexander stepped up to the plate and hit a solo home run to left-center.
Langford Goes Bang-ford
The Rangers scored again in the bottom of the sixth.
Josh Smith doubled to center to lead off. He scored, moments later, on a single to right by Seager.
On deck was Marcus Semien, who reached on a sharp single left. Two batters later, Wyatt Langford tattooed a ball to left for a three-run blast, his 16th of the campaign. It was also his first home run since July 11 against the Houston Astros at Daikin Park.
The Rangers tied it up in the bottom of the ninth off reliever Andrew Hoffmann. Rowdy Tellez led off with a towering blast to right-center on a 1–1 pitch, sending the crowd into an absolute frenzy.
Burger Order Up
Fast forward to the bottom of the 10th. Reliever Andrew Saalfrank was on the mound for the Diamondbacks. Sam Haggerty trotted out to second to serve as the automatic runner.
To get things started, Saalfrank intentionally walked Seager. Up next was Semien, who flied to center, advancing Haggerty to third. This brought up Burger as a pinch-hitter for Joc Pederson.
To this reporter’s surprise, Seager moved himself into scoring position by stealing second. It was his second stolen base of the season.
On deck was Burger, who drove in Haggerty as the winning run with a single to left.
What Went Right for the Rangers
This was a big win for the Rangers. They came back from a five-run deficit to triumph in the 10th inning. Burger’s hit sealed the deal, but the homers by Langford and Tellez earlier made the former moment possible.
You can’t always run away with a 10-run lead. Sometimes you need to claw your way to victory.
What Went Wrong for the Rangers
The Diamondbacks were able to get to the Rangers early on with five unanswered runs. After hitting a home run in the second and two in the third, many thought the visiting dugout would have the last laugh.
Eovaldi Escapes Chaos
Rangers right-hander Nathan Eovaldi took a no-decision Monday. His final line was 5 IP, 8 H, 5 R-ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 3 HR, 2 HB, 86 pitches/55 strikes. He allowed season highs in hits, runs, and home runs and yielded an equal amount of earned runs to his total from his previous eight starts combined. Eovaldi surrendered three home runs, marking his first outing of the year with multiple dingers allowed and his most homers permitted since September 10, 2024, also against the Diamondbacks.
He still has a 1.71 ERA through 20 starts this season, the best mark in baseball and the lowest ERA through 20 starts in franchise history ahead of Rick Honeycutt (2.19) in 1983.
After striking out one in the tenth, reliever Phil Maton notched his second win of the year, bringing his record to 2–3 with an ERA of 2.28.
Nelson’s Evening
Diamondbacks starter Ryne Nelson also took a no-decision. His line was 5 1/3 IP, 7 H, 5 R-ER, 0 BB, 6 K, 1 HR, 97 pitches/68 strikes. He allowed one run through his first five innings before running into trouble in the sixth, when he allowed four of the first five batters in the frame to reach. Nelson departed after surrendering Langford’s three-run shot that pulled the Rangers to within one, 6-5, capping a four-run frame. Nelson’s five earned runs allowed were his most since yielding a season-high seven earned runs on June 7 against the Cincinnati Reds. He has given up a home run in three straight and in five of his last six games. He has surrendered 12 homers in 106 2/3 innings this season for a 1.01 HR/9 mark.
After surrendering Burger’s walk-off hit in the 10th, Saalfrank was stuck with his first loss, giving him an 0–1 record with an ERA of 0.69. He recorded two outs, one in the ninth and one in the tenth, and walked one batter in the tenth.
Bochy’s Postgame Comments
After the game, Rangers manager Bruce Bochy expressed how much this win meant to his team. “It’s been a rough stretch,” he remarked. We came off the sweep against the Phillies, and you’re definitely looking for a spark after that point. The fact that we were able to get Nate (Eovaldi) off the hook tonight was huge. You had Wyatt’s homer and Tellez’ homer. It was big.”
Eovaldi’s Postgame Comments
Eovaldi also made an appearance postgame to reflect on his start. “That’s all that matters at the end of the day,” he said. “I’ll work on the side and try to figure out everything that I need to work on. But at the end of the day, regardless of how well I do out there or anything, it’s about the team winning games. Especially with where we are at this point of the season and everything — again — that’s the only thing that matters.”
