Friday morning the Baltimore Orioles announced that left-hander Trevor Rogers will take the mound for the team on Opening Day. Rogers, 28, make his first career Opening Day start against the Minnesota Twins on March 26 at Oriole Park at Camden Yards at 3:05 pm Eastern.

Earning His Spot

Trevor Rogers came over to the Orioles at the trade deadline in 2024 in a deal that sent Kyle Stowers and Connor Norby to the Miami Marlins. Orioles fans heavily criticized the move as an overpay after Rogers barely saw the field for the Orioles in 2024 and struggled when he did. On the other side of the deal, Kyle Stowers became an All-Star while with the Marlins leading to more negative feedback surrounding the trade.

However, Rogers proved Orioles executives right by the end of 2025. Despite missing the first half of the season, Rogers finished the year ninth in Cy Young Award voting. In 18 starts and 109 2/3 innings, Rogers posted a career high in wins with nine and WAR at 5.5. He also achieved career bests in ERA at an astounding 1.81 and WHIP at 0.903. He also posted an ERA+ of 223, the highest mark of any Orioles pitcher with over 65 innings since Zack Britton posted an 803 in 2016. Rogers, the 2021 National League Rookie of the Year runner-up, certainly found his form at the big league level.

With all eyes on the Orioles this offseason as a possible landing spot for a top end starter, the front office showed trust in Rogers. They didn’t go out and add another ace, knowing that with a full season of Rogers, the Orioles already had a tried and true number one in the rotation. Rogers will be making his first Opening Day start this year and will be the fifth different Oriole starting pitcher to start game one of the season in as many years.

Looking Ahead

The Orioles take on the Pittsburgh Pirates in a spring training matchup on Saturday at 1:05 pm Eastern at LECOM Park in Bradenton, Florida. The starters for both teams are yet to be announced.
