Philadelphia Phillies
The Philadelphia Phillies made a low cost move Thursday that could pay big dividends in their chase for the NL East crown. Philadelphia acquired veteran outfielder Derek Hill from the Chicago White Sox for two prospects, adding a right-handed bat with elite speed and defensive range.
Hill’s skill set directly addresses two weaknesses for the 37–31 Phillies, who sit eight games behind the Atlanta Braves. The Phillies’ right-handed outfielders have posted the lowest batting average in the sport at .180, while struggling to a .622 OPS against left-handers. Hill offers relief on both fronts.
How This Phillies Trade Fixes a Critical Split
Hill has carved out a career as a lefty killer. The 30-year-old owns a .272/.317/.463 slash line with a 115 wRC+ against southpaws over 295 plate appearances. In 2026, he posted a .789 OPS against lefties, the same mark he holds for his career. This gives manager Don Mattingly a reliable platoon option in an outfield that has needed one.
The speed component transforms the Phillies’ defensive alignment. Hill ranks in the 94th percentile in sprint speed at 30.1 feet per second, making him one of the fastest players in baseball. Over his career, he has recorded 11 Outs Above Average across more than 1,500 outfield innings, mostly in center. Rookie Justin Crawford ranks in the bottom 20 percent of fielders in OAA, meaning Hill could immediately upgrade late-inning defense in close games.
Possible Playoff Run
The move signals the Phillies are loading up despite the eight game deficit. Since starting 9–19 and firing manager Rob Thomson, the Phillies have gone 28–12 under Mattingly. That pace would put them around 95 wins for the season, competitive in any division.
Hill’s base running adds another dimension. He has stolen 30 bases in 39 career attempts, bringing value without requiring a hit. When games tighten in September, a 94th percentile sprinter on the base paths can manufacture runs that traditional stats miss.
The NL East chase remains steep. The Braves hold the best record in baseball at 45-23. But the Phillies trade for Hill adds defensive security, platoon balance, and speed that translates directly to wins. In a division race that will come down to margins, those small edges matter most.
