Mets Rout Pirates in Series Finale

Mets 11, Pirates 1

After being shut out in their last matchup, the New York Mets bounced back with an 11-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates in the series finale. At PNC Park Sunday, Bo Bichette led the Mets by going 5-for-5 with runs scored and three RBI. All three RBI came on a fourth-inning double. Luis Robert Jr. hit a two-run homer in the third, as he went on to tally two hits and four RBI. Francisco Alvarez also went yard in the fifth. Additionally, Jared Young contributed three hits of his own.

Their efforts supported left-hander Sean Manaea, who struck out 11 across seven innings. His lone blemish was giving up a solo shot in the third, dropping his season-long ERA to 4.33.

Mets Jump Ahead

A.J. Ewing drew a walk to start the first. Francisco Lindor was hit by a pitch before Bichette singled to load the bases. Carson Benge drove in the Mets first run with an RBI single. Robert brought Lindor home on a deep sacrifice fly to put make the score 2-0.

Manaea struck out the first batter he faced but later gave up a two-out double. But he escaped when he struck out another to end the inning. He was more composed in the second when he struck out the side in order.

Bichette hit his second single with one out in the third. Two batters later, Robert lifted the ball over the center fielder for a two-out, two-run homer. Young fed off the energy with a triple to center. Marcus Semien drove Young in with a single for the Mets’ fifth run.

In the bottom half of the inning, Manaea struck out the first two batters but yielded a two-out solo homer from Jake Mangum to end the shutout bid. However, Manaea recovered quickly by inducing a groundout.

Sealing the Win

Alvarez was hit by a pitch in the fourth prior to Ewing and Lindor drawing walks to load the bases. Bichette brought them all in with a three-run double, giving the Mets a seven-run lead. Benge drew a walk of his own before Young scored Bichette with an RBI single.

Alvarez homered to left to start the fifth. Bichette followed with a walk, and Benge hit a single. However, Robert could not drive them in.

Bichette collected his fourth hit with a double to start the seventh. Robert plated his teammate and the Mets final run of the series finale on an RBI single.

Manaea finished seven strong innings. From there, right-hander Jack Weisenburger sealed the Mets 10-run win with two strikeouts in two scoreless innings.

What Went Right for the Mets

The Mets bounced back from a loss and continued their road trip on a positive note. That was largely due to Bichette leading the way with five hits, three runs scored, and three RBI. Bichette is the second Met to go 5-for-5 and score three runs in a game this season after Benge did so June 7 in a road win over the San Diego Padres.

Robert hit a two-run shot in the third and ended with two hits and four RBI. Young and Benge combined for five hits and two RBI. Overall, the Mets totaled 15 hits and 11 runs.

Manaea provided substantial support on the rubber, going seven innings with 11 strikeouts. He earned his fourth win of the season and lowered his ERA to 4.39. Weisenburger, who spent six seasons in the minors, delivered two strikeouts in two scoreless innings to seal the series-finale win. With their assistance, the Mets won their second series of this week and hold a 52-67 record.

What Went Wrong for the Mets

Not much, other than Mangum taking Manaea deep in the third on a solo shot to spoil the shutout bid.

Looking Ahead

After taking down the Pirates, the Mets road trip continues against the Atlanta Braves. Right-hander Christian Scott (3-3, 3.15 ERA) will start for the Mets against right-hander Bryce Elder (8-6, 3.70 ERA). First pitch for Monday’s series opener is at 7:15 pm Eastern from Truist Park.
