In a one-for-one deal, the New York Mets traded right-hander Luke Weaver to the Pittsburgh Pirates for top prospect Sammy Stafura on Monday. Stafura ranked No. 9 in the Pirates system and will be the Mets No. 10 prospect. Neither team has confirmed the move, which comes hours before the August 3 deadline. Another Move
Ahead of the August 3 trade deadline, the Mets have remained active. They parted ways with A.J. Minter, Freddy Peralta, Huascar Brazoban and Brooks Raley in separate deals. Luke Weaver, who they used in a set up role, is the latest member of the group to be traded. More deals are expected to be made following these transactions.
After spending three seasons with the New York Yankees, Weaver signed a two-year deal with the Mets during the offseason. The veteran righty made a profound impact, recording 45 strikeouts in 44 innings on a 1.84 ERA. Most notably, he went 10 games from late May to early June without allowing a run to score. He proceeded to finish off his Mets tenure by not surrendering a run for another six games.
Weaver joins the Pirates to add more stability to their relief unit. They are a game below .500 and sit in third place in the NL Central standings. They lost seven of their last three, but Weaver’s reliable presence could help them get back on track.
Mets Receive Stafura
For Luke Weaver, the Mets received Stafura. He was the Pirates No. 9 ranked prospect as a shortstop and second baseman. Across four minor league seasons, he tallied 45 hits, 17 doubles, 35 home runs and 174 RBI. He was a member of High-A Greensboro minor league affiliate this year, producing 56 hits, seven doubles, 19 home runs and 51 RBI. The right-handed batter recorded these numbers are on top of slashing .301/.365/.656 on a 1.021 OPS.
