Carlos Beltran revealed that he had a conversation with the New York Mets about becoming their next manager. Beltran serves as a special assistant to President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. He also has a close relationship with former manager Carlos Mendoza, who was fired in late June. Stearns named Andy Green the interim manager, but Green will return to the front office after this season.
Beltran will be inducted into the 2026 Class of the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown on Sunday. He will be wearing a Mets cap on his Hall of Fame plague. The team will be retiring his No. 15 and inducting him into their Hall of Fame in September.
“Baseball for me is a passion, no doubt about that, and yes, I had conversations with a few people within the organization, and I didn’t feel it was the right thing to do,” Beltran said.
“I have to tell you that the respect that I had for Mendoza when he was part of the Mets is super. Carlos is a great human being. I told him that one reason that I wanted to be close with him was because I wanted to support him as much as I could with my experience of dealing with situations.”
Franchise Legend
For a multitude of reasons, Carlos Beltran is considered a Mets franchise legend. He made four consecutive All-Star appearances, won three straight Gold Glove awards and a pair of Silver Slugger awards. His best season came in 2006, when he tallied 41 home runs and 116 RBI on a .275 average.
He retired from baseball in 2017 and the Mets hired him in 2019 to become their manager. Yet, he was released two months later due to his involvement in the Houston Astros sign stealing scandal.
“Having the opportunity to manage, I have to say that probably is on my bucket list. But now I work as an advisor to the organization, and I love the work that I do,” Carlos Beltran added.
“Yes, I understand that my name has been mentioned about being a manager and all that. It’s similar to when your name comes out and they say ‘Hey, you have a chance to become a Hall of Famer.’ But at the same time, I don’t know. I’ve got to think deeply about my next step.”
