Mets 6, Guardians 5 (10 innings)
In a close middle game, the New York Mets earned a 6-5 win over the Cleveland Guardians in 10 innings at Progressive Field on Wednesday. Bo Bichette scored the go-ahead run off an RBI single in the 10th. Brett Baty and Jorge Polanco hit consecutive homers in the third before Carson Benge went yard in the sixth. Christian Scott struck out seven batters and gave up three earned runs in five innings.
Tied through Five
Following two quick innings, Baty put the Mets on the board first with a homer to center field. Moments later, Polanco followed up with a solo shot to right field. In the fourth, a pair of throwing errors from the Guardians led to Benge reaching second base. With a runner in scoring position, Jared Young hit an RBI double to right field.
The Guardians responded in the fourth when Scott walked the first batter he faced. The young righty gave up a double to Nathaniel Lowe and an RBI single to Travis Bazzana.
The Mets lead was cut down to two as Scott gave up two hits one inning later. He walked another before Lowe hit a game-tying two-run single off him. Still, Scott managed to end the inning and his outing without giving up another hit.
Mets Pull Away
With the score tied in the sixth, Benge smashed a solo shot to deep right field. That marked his second straight game in which he went yard. Jefry Yan made his Mets’ debut in the bottom half of the inning. The prospect allowed two hits and a walk but struck out two and kept the Guardians off the board.
Right-hander Dedniel Nunez made his return from injury to the Mets. The first batter he faced reached on an error. A strikeout and ground-ball force play followed. Next, Angel Martinez, Patrick Bailey, and Angel Genao hit three straight singles, the latter two driving in one run each. Their efforts put the Guardians ahead by a run.
After a scoreless eighth, Young drew a walk to start the ninth. Polanco hit a double to advance his teammate before Semien walked. A fielding error by Brayan Rocchio allowed Young to score the tying run.
In the bottom of the inning, the Guardians failed to score. Bichette put the Mets ahead, 6–5, on an RBI single in the 10th. In the bottom of the inning, the Guardians got runners to first and second with one out before an infield popup and groundout ended the game.
What Went Right for the Mets
Bichette scored the go-ahead run on his lone hit of the game. Baty and Polanco started the evening with a pair of homers. Benge went yard in his second straight game. Young led the Mets with two of the team’s eight hits.
Scott went five innings and struck out seven batters. He weathered through a challenging fifth to drop his season-long ERA to 3.15. Yan struck out two batters in his debut and gave up two hits.
What Went Wrong for the Mets
Nunez surrendered three hits and two runs but recorded two strikeouts. Scott gave up three earned runs, leading to the Guardians tying the game.
