Brandon Nimmo Re-Signs with Mets

The New York Mets are bringing outfielder Brandon Nimmo back into the fold. The Mets announced on Thursday evening that they have re-signed Nimmo to an eight-year deal. It has been a busy offseason for the Mets so far. They lost right-hander Jacob deGrom to free agency. He signed a five-year contract with the Texas Rangers in late November. The Mets didn’t wait long to fill the hole left by deGrom, however. Mere days after deGrom’s departure, they came to terms with free agent righty Justin Verlander on a two-year pact worth $86 million.

Brandon Nimmo Contract Details

The Mets were eliminated in the 2022 NL Wild Card series. Their recent acquisitions seem to indicate that they are determined to put their playoff loss to the San Diego Padres in the rearview mirror for good. Retaining the services of Brandon Nimmo is an important step toward making that happen. This new deal between the Mets and Nimmo is worth $162 million over the course of eight years.

The 29-year-old outfielder played a career-high 151 games in 2022 and produced 5.0 WAR (per Baseball-Reference) for the Mets. He posted a .274/.367/.433 slash with 16 home runs and 102 runs scored. He also drove in 64 runs. The 2022 season marked the second time in seven seasons (including the shortened 2020 season) that he played in 100 games. Drafted in the 13th round in 2011, Nimmo did not become a starter until the 2018 season. He has also dealt with numerous injuries prior to 2022. It will be interesting to see how he does in the 2023 season.
