Right-hander Trevor May has agreed to terms with the Oakland Athletics. The club made the announcement on Friday. The contract is for one year. The addition of May gives the A’s another piece to their bullpen. While it is a small sample, May also has postseason experience as he made two playoff appearances for the New York Mets in 2022.

Trevor May’s 2022 Season

Trevor May went 2–0 with a save, and a 5.04 ERA in 26 relief appearances for the Mets in 2022. His season was interrupted, however, due to an inflamed right triceps. This forced May onto the injured list for three months. His new contract with the Athletics gives him a much-needed fresh start. In his 26 appearances for the Mets in 2022, he walked nine batters and struck out 30 in 25 innings. In two postseason appearances, he struck out four and walked one in 2 1/3 hitless innings.

Career Resume

Trevor May made his major league debut with the Minnesota Twins in 2014. He pitched six seasons with the Twins before spending the last two seasons with the Mets. He missed the 2017 season following Tommy John surgery. The 33-year-old May has a career record of 32–24 with 12 saves, and a 4.35 ERA in 309 career appearances, including 26 starts. He has struck out 480 batters in 403 2/3 career innings and has walked 136 for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 3.53.

Making Room for Trevor May on Athletics Roster

To make room on the 40-man roster for Trevor May, the A’s designated outfielder Cody Thomas for assignment. Thomas sat out the first four months of the 2022 season following surgery in February on his Achilles tendon. He made his Major League debut with the A’s in September. The 28-year-old went 8-for-30 (.267) with no extra-base hits, no RBI, and a .579 OPS in ten games with the Athletics, and combined for a .196 average, a home run, 10 RBI, and .604 OPS in 16 minor league games.
