San Francisco Giants
The San Francisco Giants sign Taylor Rogers. They have agreed on a three-year, deal which is reported at $33 million according to Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. Also, a source told MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand the team has not confirmed the signing pending a physical but should be made official soon.
Top Free-Agent Reliever
He was considered one of the top free-agent relievers. The left-hander has been effective after he rediscovered himself in the 2018 season when he added a slider to his pitch selection. That pitch has become a mainstay for him as it leads to many groundball outs. Left-handed hitters have just a .196 average against that pitch. He will now join his twin brother in the bullpen, as Tyler Rogers has been an effective reliever for the Giants since 2019.
Unique Opportunity
This is a unique opportunity as the Rogers brothers. They have a chance to become only the fourth set of twins to appear in the same MLB game for the same team. Back in 1915, Joe Shannon and Red Shannon played in a game for the Boston Braves. In 1956 Johnny and Eddie O’Brien played in the same game for the Pittsburgh Pirates and in 1990 both Jose and Ozzie Canseco were teammates with the Oakland Athletics.
Both Taylor and Tyler pitched in the same game last season, but for different teams when Taylor was a member of the San Diego Padres and Tyler for the Giants.
A Need for Their Bullpen
Rogers was a certain need for the Giants in their bullpen. Scott Alexander and Sam Long are the only left-handers in the bullpen currently on the roster. However, Alexander has battled injuries the past few years and Long has just 40 games in the majors. With those two as their only options, it certainly made sense to go after Rogers. Look for him to become Gabe Kapler’s go-to arm from the left side.
Has Durability
San Francisco Giants sign Taylor Rogers and he will bring durability. He has never missed any significant time due to injury. In 385 appearances, he has 445 strikeouts, 95 walks, 81 saves, and a 3.42 ERA, He has also shown he can pitch on consecutive days.
The Giants are looking to rebound from a third-place finish in the NL West last season. Some of that can be attributed to their underperforming bullpen. Having Rogers will add a much-needed boost for them.
