When William Contreras won World Series MVP on Wednesday night, he didn’t add another piece of hardware to his trophy case. Rather, the 28-year-old cemented his family’s legacy. With three combined World Series titles between him and Willson Contreras, the two became the sixth pair of brothers in major league history to win the Fall Classic a combined three times. Here’s a look at the other pairs of brothers to accomplish the feat.
Irish and Bob Meusel
Irish Meusel, the oldest of the two, won back-to-back World Series titles with the then-New York Giants in 1921 and 1922. He was especially impactful in the latter, hitting .331 with 132 RBI that season.
The following year, Bob Meusel won his first World Series title with the New York Yankees. He won two more with the team, in 1927 and 1928, driving in 100+ runs each season as a part of the team’s iconic “Murderers Row” lineup.
Clete and Ken Boyer
Clete Boyer won the duo’s first two trophies with the Yankees in 1961 and 1962. He made his mark in both postseasons, posting OPS’s of .821 and .833, respectively.
Ken Boyer, meanwhile, followed suit two years later. After winning the 1964 National League MVP award, he hit two home runs that postseason to lift the St. Louis Cardinals over the Yankees in the Fall Classic.
Jesus and Matty Alou
Jesus Alou and Matty Alou combined to win three straight World Series titles with the then-Oakland Athletics from 1972 to 1974. Matty won the first of the three, although he registered one hit in 24 at-bats in the 1972 Fall Classic.
The following season, Jesus joined the Athletics midseason via trade and hit .306 in 36 games. He fizzled out in the postseason with a .222 average in 13 games, but he aided his family name with two more titles.
Livan and Orlando Hernandez
Livan Hernandez famously became the second youngest World Series MVP in baseball history, capturing the award at 22 years old with the Cardinals in 1997. His brother, Orlando Hernandez, then won three consecutive titles with the Yankees from 1998-2000. He later joined the Chicago White Sox, posting a 5.12 ERA in 2005 but winning his fourth World Series title.
Bengie, Jose, and Yadier Molina
The only trio on this list, the Molina brothers won a combined five World Series. Bengie Molina and Jose Molina won the first two, helping the then-Anaheim Angels win their first championship in team history in 2002. Bengie never won another, while Jose was a part of the Yankees’ 2009 title-winning team.
Yadier Molina, meanwhile, carved out his own legacy by winning the 2006 and 2011 World Series with the Cardinals. He hit .412 and .333, respectively, cementing himself as an all-time great in the organization.
William and Willson Contreras
Willson debuted in 2016 and immediately helped the Chicago Cubs end their 108-year title drought. Five years later, William helped the Atlanta Braves win their first championship in over 20 years in his second season. Five years after that, William won his second World Series title and first World Series MVP as a member of the Milwaukee Brewers.
