Defending AL Batting Champion Luis Arraez has been traded to the Miami Marlins for Starting Pitcher Pablo Lopez and two prospects by the Minnesota Twins.
All-Star Heads to South Beach
Luis Arraez led the American League with a .316 average in 2022 en route to his first All-Star appearance. His high contact rate, and strong eye gave him more walks than strikeouts. He had a WAR of 4.4 in 2022. He is under team control until 2025. Over the course of his career, Arraez has a .314 batting average. The Arraez trade is the latest effort by the Marlins to strengthen their infield, as he joins free agent signee Jean Segura. The re-signing of Carlos Correa created a log jam in the Twins’ infield ensuring that Arraez could be traded.
Lopez Moves North
Pablo Lopez heads to Target Field to pitch for the Twins. Lopez was expected to be moved this offseason to create room in the crowded Marlins starting rotation. The rotation is led by Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara. Lopez made 32 starts last season for the Marlins with an ERA of 3.75, averaging over a strikeout per inning. In his career, he has an ERA of 3.94 with a WHIP of 1.19. He is under team control until 2025. Last week, he signed a one-year deal for $5.45 million to avoid arbitration.
Prospects on the Move
Nineteen-year-old shortstop Jose Salas and 17-year old outfielder Byron Chourio will join the Twins’ farm system as part of the Arraez trade. Salas played last season at Miami’s single A affiliate Beloit, while Chourio debuted in the Dominican Summer League.
