Veteran outfielder Teoscar Hernandez and the Los Angeles Dodgers have agreed to a one-year deal worth $23.5 million for the 2024 season. The Dodgers explored options to improve their outfield and have landed a big-name free agent. They platooned in left field last year, and have found themselves with a solidified outfielder.

Teoscar Hernandez

Teoscar Hernandez, an All-Star outfielder, started his career with the Houston Astros, before he joined the Toronto Blue Jays in 2017. In Toronto, Hernandez experienced the most significant years of his career thus far. However, struggling in 2017, 2018 and 2019, he did not look like the piece the Blue Jays needed to help their outfield. This would all change in the next three years. From 2020-2022, he made significant improvements at the plate. Improving from his batting average from .230 to .289 in 2020, His season during the pandemic-shortened season was good in the 59 games he appeared in.

In 2021, Hernandez had his breakout year. Averaging .296 at the plate, Hernandez was explosive. He hit 30 home runs and drove in 100 for the first time in his career. This earned him his first All-Star appearance and second Silver Slugger Award. In 2022, he slumped to a .267 average with 25 home runs and 77 RBI. Hernandez was acquired by the Seattle Mariners in 2023, and his stint in Seattle lasted one season. In his most recent season, he posted a .258 average, .305 OBP, .741 OBP in 160 games.

Los Angeles Dodgers

The Los Angeles Dodgers’ big off-season continues as they add a piece to their outfield that needs to be addressed. In 2022, the Dodgers platooned their outfield with J.D. Martinez, Jonny DeLuca, David Peralta and Chris Taylor. They also need an everyday right-fielder, as Mookie Betts has moved to second for the 2024 season. Hernandez most recently played right field in his last season for Seattle but has played all three outfield positions.

With big names already acquired this off-season, such as Tyler Glasnow, Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto, the Dodgers now acquire Teoscar Hernandez in their big spending off-season. The Arizona Diamondbacks swept the Dodgers in the 2023 NLDS. Their off-season goal is now World Series or bust for the future of Dodger Nation.
