David Dahl is back with the Philadelphia Phillies after signing a minor league deal. The 30-year-old outfielder will report to Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

The Phillies designated Dahl for assignment on July 9 as a corresponding move for reinstating both Bryce Harper and Kyle Schwarber from the IL. Dahl opted to test free agency before returning to the Phillies organization.

David Dahl is Back with Lehigh Valley After a Short Stint with the Phillies

Dahl enjoyed success with the IronPigs in 43 games earlier this year. He slashed .340/.416/.660 with a 1.076 OPS and 12 home runs. The veteran enjoyed similar success when his contract was selected by the Phillies on June 3 after outfielder Brandon Marsh was placed on the IL with a hamstring injury.

Dahl went 4-for-6 with two home runs, two RBI, and one double in his first three games with the Phillies after being called up. Dahl quickly fell back to reality after recording only eight hits, one double, one home run, and five RBI in his next 16 games. He was designated for assignment after 19 games played which ended a feel-good reemergence story. He also struck out quite a bit with 21 strikeouts in 62 plate appearances with the Phillies.

Could We See David Dahl Back in the Big Leagues This Season?

The Phillies do have a need when it comes to the outfield. The NL East leaders have been linked to multiple outfield trade candidates as the July 30 trade deadline approaches. Inconsistent play has somewhat plagued the group all season.

Nick Castellanos has been heating up as the season progresses and Marsh has been in a platoon role for much of the season. Other than those two, the Phillies’ options in the outfield are Cristian Pache and Johan Rojas. Both players by no means have their spots locked into the lineup or even the 26-man roster.

The door isn’t closed for a potential reunion with the big league club. Dahl could be back in red pinstripes if he continues the success that he had earlier in the season in Triple-A. His chances increase significantly if Dave Dombrowski is unable to bring in a new outfielder before the deadline.
