Rockies Trade Jalen Beeks to Pirates for Prospect

The Colorado Rockies announced Monday evening that they have traded left-handed reliever Jalen Beeks to the Pittsburgh Pirates. In exchange, the Pirates sent them minor league lefty reliever Luis Peralta. Peralta, 23, is the younger brother of Milwaukee Brewers right-handed starter Freddy Peralta, a 2021 All-Star.

Rockies Get Luis Peralta

Luis Peralta (4–0, 0.91 ERA, 5 SV) has held opponents scoreless in 22 of 26 appearances (85%) between the High-A Greensboro (NC) Grasshoppers and Double-A Altoona (PA) Curve. He has allowed four earned runs across 39 2/3 IP with 18 walks, 64 strikeouts, and a 0.983 WHIP. Additionally, he has a 0.6 HR% (1 HR out of 156 batters faced), a 41.0 K% (eighth in the minors, min. 30 IP), an 11.5 BB%, and a 29.5 K–BB%. Peralta, who hails from Moca, Dominican Republic, is ranked by Baseball America as the 24th-best prospect in the Pirates system.

Pirates Get Jalen Beeks

Jalen Beeks, 31, came to the Rockies on waivers from the Tampa Bay Rays November 6, 2023. In a career-high 45 appearances with the Rockies, he has gone 6–4 with a 4.74 ERA, 101 ERA-minus, a 62.2% Scoreless Outing Percentage (28 of 45; 74% NL average), and a career-high nine saves. In 49 1/3 innings, Beeks has 38 strikeouts, 18 walks, and a 1.358 WHIP. Additionally, he has a 2.8 HR% (6 HR out of 211 batters faced), an 18.0 K%, an 8.5 BB%, and a 9.5 K–BB%. For reference, the NL averages are 2.8%, 22.1%, 8.2%, and 13.9%, respectively.

Looking Ahead

Beeks heads from the last-place Rockies (38–69, 25 GB in NL West) to the third-place Pirates (53–52). Although the Pirates trail the NL Central-leading Brewers by seven games, they are only two games out of the third NL Wild Card spot. Notably, since adding the third Wild Card team prior to the 2022 season, both NL pennant winners made the playoffs as the third Wild Card (2022 Philadelphia Phillies, 2023 Arizona Diamondbacks).
