The Philadelphia Phillies added another piece to the bullpen ahead of the trade deadline. Left-handed pitcher Tanner Banks is heading to Philadelphia from the Chicago White Sox for infield prospect William Bergolla.
Banks is 32 years old and has a 4.13 ERA in 48 innings pitched this season. He was drafted in the 18th round of the 2014 MLB Draft by the White Sox. The lefty spent his entire career in the minor leagues until he made his major league debut in 2022 at 30 years old. Banks has a career 3.89 ERA with 155 strikeouts and 20 home runs allowed in 108 games, including four starts.
Banks joins José Alvarado and All-Star Matt Strahm as the left-handed options in the bullpen. The Phillies traded left-handed pitcher Gregory Soto to the Baltimore Orioles before the deadline, so he’s no longer an option.
What Did it Take for Phillies to Acquire Tanner Banks?
It didn’t take much for the Phillies to acquire Banks. This was a move to give manager Rob Thomson an extra left-handed arm coming out of the bullpen. The Phillies traded middle infielder prospect Bergolla who was the club’s No. 11 prospect, per MLB’s prospect rankings. The 19-year-old has a high baseball IQ but needs to work on his power at the plate.
The Phillies didn’t necessarily make any blockbuster moves like some reports suggested leading up to the deadline. President of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski did address areas of need. He acquired a right-handed outfield bat in Austin Hays, a high-powered late-inning reliever in Carlos Estévez, and now a left-handed arm in the bullpen in Banks.
Phillies fans might feel a little disappointed after not landing names such as Luis Robert Jr., Randy Arozarena, Cody Bellinger, Tanner Scott, or Garrett Crochet. The fans need to remember that the Phillies are one of the top teams in baseball and already have a star-studded lineup. Those stars need to step up and get the job done heading into the playoff push.
