The New York Mets front office has expanded with the recent additions of Derek Falvey and Kris Gross. Falvey will serve as the team’s senior advisor to baseball operations and work alongside President of Baseball Operations David Stearns. Gross was promoted to the role of assistant general manager after joining the club as its vice president of amateur scouting. The organization announced both moves on Thursday.
This comes after Mets owner Steve Cohen said that he wants to add more perspectives to the front office in support of Stearns. As he made his claim, some fans theorized that the Mets could hire a general manager to work under Stearns. But, Cohen made it clear that these other executives don’t have to be a general manager.
“It doesn’t have to be a GM. It could be other ways to support David and the front office,” Cohen explained in an interview on September 19. “I think the whole point is getting more opinions in the front office, and people who are either pretty good at evaluating talent or people who have been in those positions in the front office and help David out and help the team out as far as getting different points of view.”
Mets Front Office Additions
Falvey joins the Mets front office following a stint as the Minnesota Twins President of Baseball Operations. During his tenure there, the Twins won the division three times in nine seasons and reached the postseason four times. He also has a relationship with Stearns from their time together with the Cleveland Guardians organization. Falvey was the Guardians co-director of baseball operations.
“Throughout his career, Derek has distinguished himself as one of the most respected executives in our sport. His experience across the full scope of baseball operations functions and his familiarity with leading an organization will serve as a great addition to our front office group,” Stearns said in a statement.
“Throughout my conversation with the organization, what stood out were the high expectations and the commitment to winning at every level. What I’ve always loved most about this game is being part of a team, and I look forward to bringing my experience and contributing to this group in any way I can,” Falvey said in a statement.
Forming Connections
Gross, on the other hand, received the promotion from the Mets front office after exceeding expectations as the vice president of amateur scouting. In the previous role, he helped make key draft selections such as outfielder Carson Benge and top prospect Mitch Voit. He also formed a partnership with Andy Green, who the Mets named their new manager on Tuesday following a successful stint as the interim skipper.
“I have an immense amount of respect for Kris. He’s a baseball guy. He’s been in the game for a long time as a scout. The people who work under him love him, sing his praises. Obviously, we’ve had some success in the MLB Draft,” Green said.
