The New York Mets will finalize the coaching staff of manager Andy Green with the expected hiring of Johnny Washington, who will serve as co-hitting coach. He will share the role with Troy Snitker and assistant hitting coach Rafael Fernandez. The team has yet to confirm the hiring. Joel Sherman of the New York Post was first to report on the development Thursday.
Coaching Staff Finalized
The Mets restructured their coaching staff to start the offseason. They started with the dismissals of major league hitting coach Jeff Albert, quality assurance coach Danny Barnes and batting practice coach Kevin Mahoney. At the same time, they retained bench coach Kai Correa and pitching coach Justin Willard in addition to Snitker.
The Mets promoted Mariano Duncan from the minor leagues to become an assistant coach. They also hired former catcher A.J. Ellis as their major league strategy coordinator to replace Barnes. Fernandez was promoted in 2026 following a lengthy stint in the team’s minor league system which began in 2015.
Another Addition
The Mets are expected to hire Washington due to his level of experience in coaching. Washington spent this season as the Atlanta Braves minor league hitting coordinator where he worked in various levels of the organization. He also spent time with numerous other organizations, including the San Diego Padres. During that stint with the Padres, he served as the team’s first base coach in 2017 before becoming the hitting coach in 2019. He also worked under Green, who was the Padres skipper from 2017–2019. Washington was also the hitting coach of the Los Angeles Angels at one
point in his career. He also worked alongside Mets first baseman Jared Young with the Chicago Cubs and catcher Luis Torrens with the Padres. Before making the switch to coaching, he was part of the Texas Rangers and Los Angeles Dodgers farm system in his playing career.
