Athletics 3, Mets 1

The Athletics limited the potent New York Mets lineup to one run on five hits en route to a 3–1 victory at Sutter Health Park in West Sacramento, California.

Athletics – Mets Game Summary

The Athletics took a 2–0 lead in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single by Tyler Soderstrom and a bases-loaded groundout to second by JJ Bleday. In the sixth, the Mets slashed the lead in half with a solo homer by Brandon Nimmo. The Athletics completed the scoring in the bottom of the seventh on a double from Jhonny Pereda, scoring Max Muncy from first.

What Went Right for the Athletics

Pitching

J.T. Ginn, Justin Sterner, Tyler Ferguson, and Mason Miller combined to hold the vaunted Mets offense to a single run, that coming from the Nimmo home run. Notably, Pete Alonso, who tormented the Athletics Friday night with a 3-for-3 effort, was 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.

Scored without Needing the Long Ball

The Athletics did not hit any home runs Saturday despite winning. This is a good sign for the team, given that nearly half of their runs (28 of 65) have come via the long ball. Teams that are too dependent on home runs to score runs are more prone to scoring droughts than teams that build innings.

Spreading the Love

Every Athletics player with at least one plate appearance had a hit.

What Went Wrong for the Athletics

Defensive Miscues

They didn’t lead to any runs this time, but the Athletics committed two errors. They are currently second in the American League and third in the majors with 12.

Runners Left in Scoring Position

Of the five runners the Athletics left on base, four were in scoring position. It did not cost them the game, but it is something that cannot become a regular occurrence.

Quick Hits

Jacob Wilson extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a fourth-inning double, later scoring the first run of the game. He is the first rookie to open a season with a hitting streak of 15 games or greater since David Dahl’s 17-game streak to open the 2016 season. Dahl is tied with Leon Roberts (1975) and Chuck Aleno (1941) for the record. Wilson can match Juan Pierre (2000) and Bobby Wilkins (1945) in his next game. … Wilson needs two more games to match Stan Javier (1994) for the Athletics franchise record in season-opening hitting streaks.

Looking Ahead

Ginn earned the win as Mets starter David Peterson took the loss. With his scoreless ninth inning, Miller earned his fourth save of the season.

The Athletics (6–9) will shoot for their second series win of the season (and first at home) Sunday afternoon in their series conclusion with the Mets (9–5). Athletics ace Luis Severino will face a fellow right-hander, Kodai Senga of the Mets. First pitch will be at 1:05 pm Pacific.
