Red Sox Lose to Yankees Amidst Two-Hit Performance

The Boston Red Sox, amidst a two-hit performance, suffered a 4–1 loss to the New York Yankees. New York starter Luis Gil wound up holding the Red Sox to a mere two hits, while going six innings and striking out four hitters.

Red Sox Vs. Yankees Summary

The Yankees kicked the scoring off in the first, as Aaron Judge hit an 0–1 offering off Gil out of Fenway Park. Totaling at 468 feet, the Yankees took a quick 1–0 lead. After the first two innings proved unfruitful for the Red Sox, the Yankees added on. A third inning RBI single from Cody Bellinger extended the Yankee lead to 2–0.

It wasn’t until the fifth where the Red Sox put some kind of rally, with back-to-back walks from Carlos Narvaez and David Hamilton. Despite this, Yankee starter Gil would get out of the jam.

The seventh inning saw more Yankees insurance. Ryan McMahon, via a fielder’s choice and David Hamilton error, gave New York a 3–0 lead. Ben Rice would add to it with an RBI single for a 4–0 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.

The Red Sox offense finally saw some momentum. A Fernando Cruz first-pitch sinker was hit for a home run by Nate Eaton, his first home run in a Red Sox uniform. It finally got the goose egg out from Boston’s side of the score, making it 4–1.

What Went Right for the Red Sox

Fighting Spirit

Despite not mustering much offense throughout the game, it wasn’t due to a lack of effort. Only two of the Red Sox’s nine go-arounds at the plate resulted in 1-2-3 innings.

Fine Outings from Relievers

Zack Kelly and Chris Murphy were once again given the ball in the late innings. Neither guy surrendered a run, something Justin Wilson unfortunately couldn’t prevent.

What Went Wrong for the Red Sox

Defense Screwing Up

Three errors are simply unacceptable from a team in the playoff race. Even worse when the team benefitting directly from it is your sworn rivals. Having more errors than hits is a bad sign as well.

Red Sox Two-Hit Performance

Gil had a no-hitter going through six innings before getting taken out. Boston’s only baserunners before the seventh were from base on balls, which Gil surrendered four of during his outing.

Bad Numbers with RISP

Unfortunately, Boston’s two whole hits couldn’t come in key situations. The Red Sox went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Mr. Hamilton

Hamilton did not do anything to inspire optimism in Boston fans. Going 0-for-3 with a walk, while having two errors in the field isn’t the recipe for keeping a job.

Looking Ahead

The Red Sox have two more games against the Yankees over the weekend. The Red Sox now sit a game and a half behind the Yankees in the standings. Fortunately for the Red Sox, they still sit second in the AL Wildcard standings.
