As the Baltimore Orioles season pushes through the final games of its 162 in 2025, Coby Mayo has been in the spotlight for the majority of the season. Mayo, the former eighth-best overall prospect according to Baseball America, has had a rocky start to his big league career. However, this September, Mayo reached another stratosphere, giving the Baltimore faithful a lot to look forward to in 2026. Mayo comes into the last regular season game slashing .314/.407/.571 in the last month of the season. He also racked up five home runs and nine walks in only 23 games in September.
Spring Training Backlash Leads to Early Struggles
After batting only .098 in his first stint in Baltimore in 2024, Coby Mayo’s struggles continued into 2025. He was optioned to Triple-A Norfolk to start the year. Mayo, 23, was unhappy about the decision, having already played with the big league club in 2024. His unhappiness came to a head when he said, “It obviously sucks, because you feel like you’ve proved everything you needed to… it’s kind of a lose-lose going to Norfolk,” sparking outrage amongst fans. He later clarified his comments, explaining that he thought if he played well in Norfolk, it would be seen as simply meeting the standard, and if he performed poorly, it would be seen as a decline in production.
Nevertheless, Mayo was recalled on May 3 before being placed on the Injured List with a fractured rib. He was then recalled on May 31 and has been on the Major League roster since. From his return to the show in May until August, Mayo only hit .184 with six home runs in 60 games. Many were beginning to think the former top prospect was going to be a bona fide bust.
September Surge
In a season where the Orioles haven’t lived up to expectations, the last month is still vitally important. It is a section of the season that shows glimpses into the future of the club. It’s a glimpse of who will and who won’t be a part of a team looking to contend in 2026. Coby Mayo stepped up to the task in the 2025 season.
Since the start of the month, Mayo is hitting .314 with an OPS of .978. In his last fifteen games of the month, heading into game 162, he is slugging .721. All of this comes while improving steadily defensively as a first baseman. For the Baltimore faithful, Mayo’s success isn’t only a hot streak — it’s a glimpse into the future.
