The Chicago Cubs began this offseason by adding multiple new faces to their bullpen. But they stood clear of making any significant changes to their roster. That was until last week, when they traded for right-hander Edward Cabrera and signed All-Star infielder Alex Bregman.
Both players can help take the franchise to an even higher level after reaching the NLDS for the first time since 2017. Yet, the Cubs have time left in this offseason to make another decision. Even though it might come in the form of a reunion with free agent outfielder Kyle Tucker, they can still bring in talent.
Acquiring Cabrera From Marlins
For the past few weeks, reports had suggested that the Miami Marlins were looking to trade Cabrera. The New York Mets and New York Yankees equally had high interest in trading for the 23-year-old righty. But it was the Cubs, who arranged a substantial trade package, sending prospects Owen Caissie, Cristian Hernandez and Edgardo El Leon to the Marlins.
Cabrera, meanwhile, adds much-desired depth to the Cubs’ rotation featuring All-Star Shota Imanaga. In five seasons with the Marlins, Cabrera went 25–29 with a 4.07 ERA in 87 starts. Last season, he tallied 150 strikeouts in 137 ½ innings. However, he did surrender 121 hits, 54 earned runs and 17 home runs.
Giving Bregman a Five-Year Contract
The Cubs’ next order of business was to bring in a quality batter by the end of this offseason. They did so, agreeing to terms with Bregman on a five-year, $175 million contract. The deal includes a no-trade clause and opt-outs each year.
The 31-year-old infielder will join Dansby Swanson in the Cubs’ lineup, providing reliable power and contact hitting. In 10 major league seasons, Bregman has 1,250 hits, 293 doubles, 725 RBI and 209 home runs. He is a three-time All-Star, making his last appearance with the Boston Red Sox last season. Bregman also has championship-winning experience, something that the Cubs are looking for.
Looking Ahead
With time remaining in this offseason, the Cubs can still bring in more talent. Although many of the top free agents have already found new homes, there are still some names left on the open market.
For example, if they want to add more outfield depth, Tommy Pham is an affordable option. If the Cubs want to bring in another pitcher, Ranger Suarez would be a quality addition to pair with Cabrera. Either way, the Cubs still have time left in this offseason to make another significant decision.
