The New York Yankees have agreed to a trade with the Houston Astros on Sunday.
In exchange for infielder Braden Shewmake, the Yankees will extend their bullpen in the minors with right-handed reliever Wilmy Sanchez.
Yankees Shewmake to the Astros
Braden Shewmake, 28, was originally drafted in 2019 as a first-round pick. Selected 21st overall following his time with the Texas A&M Aggie baseball team, he signed with the Atlanta Braves. Shewmake played with the Aggies from 2017 to 2019 as a standout shortstop. He earned SEC Freshman of the Year and All-American honors, aiding in his success in the draft.
Since the start of 2025, Shewmake has been a part of four different organizations. He was designated for assignment by the Chicago White Sox and claimed by the Kansas City Royals. Shortly after, the Royals designated him for assignment before the Yankees picked him up. Most recently, Shewmake was hitting .250 over 10 games with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
With Jeremy Pena already on the injured list with a hamstring injury and Nick Allen experiencing back spasms on Friday, should Allen join the IL, Shewmake could be an option to call up.
Sanchez to the Yankees
Wilmy Sanchez came to the Astros in May of 2022 as an undrafted free agent. He is originally from the Dominican Republic.
Among the Houston farmhands, the 22-year-old tied for second in saves. He was also third in appearances with 46 in 2025. However, his 2025 season was his first in Double-A and proved to be a challenge as he worked up a 6.05 ERA. Despite that, throughout his time in the minors, Sanchez pitched to an 8-6 record with a 3.80 ERA overall.
Yankees and Astros Trade Conclusion
With the Astros low on shortstops, Shewmake could potentially aid in the infield needs, while Sanchez adds to the Yankees’ minor league pitching depth.
