Marcus Semien to Injured List

New York Mets second baseman Marcus Semien will spend the next four to six weeks on the injured list with a Grade Three hip flexor strain. The veteran infielder hit the 10-day injured list last week due to a hip injury. Upon further evaluation, the month-long timetable was determined. Jon Heyman of the New York Post first reported on this development Monday.

Marcus Semien Sidelined

During the offseason, the Mets traded outfielder Brandon Nimmo to the Texas Rangers for Semien. The expectation was for Semien to give his new team consistent production at the plate and on defense. That has yet to come to fruition.

Marcus Semien started his first season with the Mets hitting .125 with two hits and two RBI. His numbers improved to slashing .235/.286/.382 with 24 hits, four home runs and 13 RBI. In comparison, he was batting .230 with 108 hits, 15 home runs, and 62 RBI with the Rangers last season. On defense, he committed two fielding errors against the Chicago Cubs, which is uncharacteristic for a player of his caliber.

In a corresponding move, the Mets recalled Ronny Mauricio from Triple-A Syracuse to replace Semien. The team has also used Brett Baty at second base but to no avail. Baty has been hitting .210 with 26 RBI and three home runs. Since returning from a broken thumb, Mauricio has provided two hits.

Another Injury

The Mets lineup has been riddled with injuries. Juan Soto missed 15-games with a quad injury. Jorge Polanco and Luis Robert Jr. have yet to play since going down with injuries earlier in the year. Tyrone Taylor was also sidelined with a grade 1 hip flexor strain, resulting in him missing 28 days.

At least Francisco Lindor made his return from a quad injury last week. Polanco has begun another rehab assignment and can rejoin the team in the near future. Yet without the production of Marcus Semien, the Mets will need either Baty or Mauricio to step up.
