After a quiet start to the season, Tyrone Taylor has stepped up for the New York Mets. In need of production, the veteran outfielder recorded three hits and three RBI, including a towering three run homer against the Atlanta Braves. He did the same in the game prior, smashing a three-run home run. His efforts have given the Mets lineup more emphasis, as they have totaled 22 runs across their last two wins.
“Taylor continues to do some impressive stuff. It’s phenomenal swings right now. Great at-bats. If he swings and misses, it doesn’t impact the next swing. He’s hitting the ball out front. It’s really impressive,” interim manager Andy Green said.
Tyrone Taylor Steps Up
Taylor showed signs of consistency at the start of this season, recording 18 hits, three home runs and 14 RBI across the first two months. Yet, his fourth season in Queens was brought to a standstill by a hip injury. He spent most of June on the injured list and on rehabilitation assignments.
Upon returning, Tyrone Taylor strung together five hits, three home runs and three RBI to start the month. In his next five games, he produced nine hits, three home runs and nine RBI. As of Tuesday, he has recorded 34 hits, nine home runs and 26 RBI on a .250 average. Some of those numbers are much higher than last season when he hit two home runs and 27 RBI in 113 appearances.
“He’s impressed me as a person for years now. The type of teammate he is, the way he goes about his work. Can’t imagine anybody wouldn’t love having him on their team, and he really defends the field,” Green added.
Perfect Timing
Tyrone Taylor has stepped up for the Mets at the same time as shortstop Francisco Lindor and second baseman Marcus Semien. In the team’s last six games, Lindor has nine hits, including two home runs and six RBI against the Braves. Semien, on the other hand, has produced six hits, three home runs and six RBI. The trio accounted for 11 of the Mets’ total 14 runs against the Braves.
“[Taylor] is a great teammate, great person and he understands his role and he’s good at it,” Lindor said. “He doesn’t complain. He goes out there and plays the game the right way day in and out, and he gives us a chance to win every single day.”
“[Taylor’s] such a good guy. Always positive even though the tough times of this year. He’s the same guy. He’s found something that’s working for him right now,” Semien added.
