The trade deadline has come and gone in Major League Baseball, and some of the game’s biggest names have settled into their new homes. However, while some have found immediate success, others have struggled mightily.
Tarik Skubal
As expected, Tarik Skubal has fit like a glove in the Los Angeles Dodgers’ rotation. Through six starts, the two-time American League Cy Young Award winner has pitched to a 3.03 ERA. He’s also showcased his command, totaling 43 strikeouts and 8 walks. His 1.18 WHIP is slightly higher than his career average of 1.02, as Skubal has allowed seven or more hits in multiple outings. However, for someone three months removed from an elbow injury, he’s looked very good.
Adley Rutschman
While Skubal hasn’t missed a beat coming off injury, Adley Rutschman certainly has. In August, the former first overall pick hit .170 with a .500 OPS. He struck out 15 times in as many games, with multiple strikeouts in four of them. In his return to Camden Yards on Thursday, Rutschman homered twice, meaning a return to form could be in store. However, for someone the Boston Red Sox paid top dollar for, the early returns have not been promising.
Luis Garcia Jr.
The New York Yankees were in desperate need of offense at the trade deadline, and Luis Garcia Jr. has provided exactly that. In 100 plate appearances, the team’s biggest deadline acquisition has hit .290 with five home runs, 12 RBI, and an .823 OPS. His defense has also improved, with Garcia Jr. making one error in the 23 games he’s played in pinstripes.
Taylor Ward
Taylor Ward has fit right into the Seattle Mariners’ lineup, but not in a good way. For the lowest-scoring team in all of baseball, Ward has hit .108 with 23 strikeouts and -0.8 WAR in 22 games. His home run woes have also followed him to the Pacific Northwest, as the 28-year-old has yet to leave the yard. The Mariners sit six games out of first in the AL West, and Ward’s play is a big reason why.
Jo Adell
Jo Adell has been an RBI machine for the Cleveland Guardians, driving in 22 runs in 28 games. He’s also been more patient at the plate, with 11 of his 27 walks this season coming after the trade deadline. The Guardians have scored the fourth-fewest runs in the AL this season, so Adell has been a welcome addition to the offense.
