Marlins Trade AJ Puk to Diamondbacks

The Arizona Diamondbacks announced on Thursday that they have acquired Miami Marlins left-hander AJ Puk in exchange for minor league infielder Deyvison De Los Santos and center fielder Andrew Pintar. Puk started the season struggling in the Marlins rotation, but has been lights out since moving to the bullpen with a 2.08 ERA in over 30 innings. He has held hitters to a .159 batting average. This marks the first trade of the August 1 deadline period.

Puk, A Former First Rounder

The Minnesota native was originally the sixth overall pick in the 2016 draft by the Oakland Athletics out of the University of Florida. Puk spent three seasons with the Athleticss before being traded to the Marlins for JJ Bleday before last season. The reigning NL Champions hope that he will stabilize their bullpen as they push for another postseason after dealing with injuries. The Diamondbacks are currently one game out of a Wild Card spot and three games over .500.

Miami Gets Prospects.

The Marlins get two mid-level prospects in return. De Los Santos, a former Rule Five pick, and Pintar, an intriguing outfield prospect will head to the Marlins’ system. The 21-year-old infielder was selected by the Cleveland Guardians in last December’s Rule 5 draft, but was returned to the Diamondbacks in spring training after not making the Guardians’ roster. He has clobbered pitching in the Pacific Coast League for the Reno Aces. He has 28 home runs on the season. split between Reno and Amarillo. Drafted as in infielder in 2022 out of BYU, Pintar transitioned to the outfield to use his plus speed. In 262 at-bats at Double-A Amarillo, he is hitting .285 with nine home runs and 19 stolen bases. The Marlins expect to be heavy sellers at the deadline. Tanner Scott and Jazz Chisholm Jr. are among the available  players.
