The Houston Astros defeated the Miami Marlins 8–5 on Monday night at Daikin Park behind a six-run second inning that featured Jeremy Peña‘s grand slam and two home runs from Yordan Alvarez.
Astros – Marlins Game Summary
The Astros and Marlins traded scoreless first innings. Ronel Blanco struck out two batters in his first appearance of the season. Janson Junk matched him by limiting the Astros to one hit through the opening frame.
The Marlins struck first in the second inning. Jakob Marsee drew a walk before Joe Mack launched a two-run home run to right field for a 2–0 lead.

The Astros answered again in the bottom of the fifth. Alvarez hit his second solo home run of the game to restore a three-run lead. Jose Altuve added another insurance run in the seventh. Isaac Paredes tripled and later scored on Altuve’s RBI single to center field.
A trio of relievers protected the lead over the final three innings. Steven Okert escaped a two-on jam in the seventh with consecutive strikeouts. Bryan Abreu stranded two runners in the eighth. Josh Hader, inheriting a four-run lead, yielded three singles in the ninth and allowed one run but still recorded the final two outs to secure the victory.
What Went Right for the Astros
Jeremy Peña
The Astros erased an early two-run deficit with one explosive inning.
After the bases became loaded in the second inning, Peña turned on a pitch and drove it into the right-field seats for a grand slam. His seventh home run of the season gave the Astros the lead for good.
Yordan Alvarez
Alvarez remained the Astros’ most dangerous hitter throughout the night.
He collected three hits, including a pair of solo home runs, and also singled during the first inning. His first homer capped the six-run second inning, and his second blast in the fifth restored a three-run cushion after the Marlins had closed the gap.
Relief Pitching
The Astros needed four key relief appearances after Blanco exited in the fifth inning.
De Los Santos stranded an inherited runner before Okert escaped a seventh-inning threat with consecutive strikeouts. Abreu pitched around a walk in the eighth, and Hader protected the win despite allowing one run in the ninth.
What Went Wrong for the Astros
Early Walks Led to Damage
The Marlins took advantage of free baserunners early in the game.
Marsee drew a two-out walk in the second inning before Mack followed with a two-run home run. Another walk in the fourth preceded Hicks’ two-run homer.
Late Opportunities to Pull Away
The Astros generated traffic after building their lead but could not completely put the game out of reach.
They left runners aboard in the sixth and eighth innings, allowing the Marlins to remain within four runs entering the ninth. Although Hader finished the job, additional insurance could have eliminated the late pressure.
