Blue Jays 10, Yankees 1

The New York Yankees’ Achilles heel showed its face again Saturday afternoon, as the Toronto Blue Jays lit up their bullpen en route to a 10–1 win in Game One of the 2025 ALDS.

The Yankees scored first in all three games of their wild card series against the Boston Red Sox, but that wasn’t the case on Saturday. In the bottom of the first inning, Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. took Yankee starter Luis Gil deep to put the Blue Jays up 1–0. In the bottom of the second, catcher Alejandro Kirk blasted a solo home run of his own to double the Blue Jays’ lead.

Yankees Fumble Opportunity in Fifth

With the bases loaded and no outs, the Yankees seemed primed to get back in the game down 2–0. Unfortunately, all they could muster was an RBI walk from Cody Bellinger. Aaron Judge and Giancarlo Stanton both struck out in the inning, while Ben Rice popped up to third base.

Blue Jays Blow Game Open

Despite not recording an out in game one of the wild card series, Yankees manager Aaron Boone put Luke Weaver on the mound to start the seventh inning. Unfortunately, the result wasn’t any different for the Yankees. After walking Daulton Varsho, Weaver gave up a single to Anthony Santander before allowing an RBI base hit to Andres Gimenez. This spelled the end of Weaver’s outing, who hasn’t recorded a single out against six batters in the postseason.

Fernando Cruz came in to relieve Weaver, but he had his own struggles as ten of his sixteen pitches were balls. By the time the seventh inning concluded, the Blue Jays were up 6–1.

Unfortunately for the Yankees, this wasn’t the end of the bullpen’s struggles. Reliever Paul Blackburn, signed off waivers in August, was given the eighth inning but allowed four earned runs on six hits.

What Went Right For Yankees

The bottom of the Yankees’ batting order was good once again, as Ryan McMahon, Anthony Volpe, and Austin Wellseach recorded a hit. The Yankees’ offense has struggled to begin the postseason, but the names above are not to blame.

What Went Wrong For Yankees

The Yankees’ bullpen was bad, but its offense wasn’t any better. Giancarlo Stanton went hitless to lower his 2025 postseason average to .067. Trent Grisham, Cody Bellinger, and Ben Rice also went without a hit.

Manager Reactions

Even though he struggled for the second straight game, Aaron Boone expressed confidence in Luke Weaver in his postgame press conference.

“It can click like that, because the stuff is there,” he said. “We’ve just got to get him locked in with his delivery.”

Despite a dominant win in game one, Blue Jays manager John Schneider didn’t get ahead of himself postgame and acknowledged the talent the Yankees possess.

“That’s a really good team over there,” said Schneider. “Every game is different.”

Looking Ahead

The Yankees and Blue Jays will face off in Toronto for Game Two of the ALDS Sunday afternoon at 4:08 pm Eastern. For the Yankees, lefty ace Max Fried will take the ball for his second postseason start of the year. The Blue Jays will put rookie Trey Yesavage on the mound for his first career postseason start.
