The New York Yankees made their first big move of free agency on Tuesday, acquiring left-hander Ryan Weathers from the Miami Marlins in exchange for prospects Dillon Lewis, Brendan Jones, Dylan Jasso, and Juan Matheus.
An Up and Down Career
Weathers, a 26-year-old lefty, made only eight starts in 2025 due to injury. He missed the first six weeks of the season due to a forearm strain, ultimately making his season debut on May 14. Unfortunately, on June 7, Weathers was struck in the head by a throw from catcher Nick Fortes during warmups. He came back on September 11, making three more starts before the season’s end. In total, Weathers pitched in 38 1/3 innings, posting a 3.99 ERA with 37 strikeouts.
The year prior, Weathers had his best major league season despite missing three months with a finger sprain. In 16 starts, he pitched to a 3.63 ERA across 86 2/3 innings, recording 80 strikeouts and garnering a 2.1 WAR.
A former first-round pick, the San Diego Padres selected Weathers seventh overall in 2018 out of Loretto High School. After three minor league seasons, the Padres called up Weathers for their 2020 NLDS matchup against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He became one of just six players ever to make his first major league appearance in a playoff game, allowing no hits and striking out one batter in 1 1/3 innings.
Weathers made the Padres’ Opening Day roster in 2021 and made 43 appearances for the team across the next three seasons. At the 2023 trade deadline, the Padres traded him to the Marlins for infielder Garrett Cooper and righty Sean Reynolds.
How Weathers Fits With Yankees
Weathers has a strong five-pitch mix, consisting of a slider, sweeper, sinker, changeup, and fastball. His sweeper generates a lot of swings and misses, and his fastball velocity is among the best in baseball. In fact, in 2025, his fastball velocity ranked in the 86th percentile.
Until Carlos Rodon and Gerrit Cole return, Weathers projects as the fifth starter in the Yankees’ rotation behind Max Fried, Cam Schlittler, Luis Gil, and Will Warren. The addition of Weathers likely moves Ryan Yarbrough to the bullpen, a spot where Weathers could join him, depending on how he performs with Cole and Rodon sidelined.
In return for Weathers, the Marlins acquired three of the Yankees’ top thirty prospects. According to MLB Pipeline, Jones, Lewis, and Jasso are ranked as the team’s 15th, 16th, and 23rd best minor leaguers, so the Marlins are banking on them contributing to the team’s success down the road.
Weathers is the son of former Yankee reliever David Weathers, who helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1996. He is under contract through 2026 and reaches arbitration the following year.
