One of the most accomplished prospects in New York Yankees history is on his way to the Bronx.
Following Jasson Dominguez’s injury against the Texas Rangers on Thursday, the Yankees announced they were calling up outfielder Spencer Jones, the team’s No. 6 prospect.
In 33 Triple-A games this year, Jones leads minor league baseball with 41 RBI while hitting .258 with a .958 OPS. He also has the second most home runs (11) and strikeouts (46).
Jones’ Minor League Career
Through his five minor league seasons, the latter two statistics have defined his playing career. In 413 games, Jones has mashed 83 home runs, highlighted by a 35-home run season in 2025 that led the minor leagues. However, with those 35 home runs, he had 179 strikeouts. Jones’ career strikeout total is 600, meaning he strikes out over one time per game on average.
As a result, Jones has been compared to former Yankee Joey Gallo, who struck out less than 35% in a season once in his 10-year career. However, in today’s day and age, players who strike out a lot can still find success at the major league level. Detroit Tigers outfielder Riley Greene and Washington Nationals outfielder James Wood are two great examples, as the two combined for 422 strikeouts in 2025. However, they each hit over .250, posted an OPS over .800, and hit over 30 home runs.
How He Fits in New York
Outside of his raw power, Jones brings 60-grade speed to a Yankees team tied for the American League lead in stolen bases with 38. Between 2023 and 2025, Jones stole 25 or more stolen bases each season, including 43 in 2023. This season, Jones has seven stolen bases in nine attempts.
Despite playing mostly in center in the minors, Jones will serve as the Yankees’ designated hitter with Giancarlo Stanton, Ben Rice, and Dominguez all hurt. Cody Bellinger, Trent Grisham, and Aaron Judge are firmly established as the team’s outfield trio, so Jones will look to inject speed and power into the Yankees’ lineup.
A 31st-round pick by the Los Angeles Angels in 2019, Spencer Jones turned down an early stint in the major leagues. He attended Vanderbilt University from 2020 to 2022. He came in as a two-way prospect, but switched to the outfield full-time after suffering a fracture in his pitching elbow.
In three seasons with the Commodores, Jones hit .329 with a .554 slugging percentage and a .972 OPS. He also stole 18 of 19 bases during that span. As a result, the Yankees selected him in the first round of the 2022 Draft.
