At the end of the August 3 trade deadline, the New York Mets traded right-hander Clay Holmes and outfielder Tyrone Taylor to the Chicago Cubs for top prospect Jefferson Rojas on Monday. Rojas was the No. 1 ranked prospect in the Cubs farm system and ranks No. 63 within MLB Pipeline’s top 100. In an instant, he became the Mets No. 1 prospect. Both teams have confirmed the deal.
Fire Sale Ends
After struggling through the entire season thus far, a Mets fire sale became inevitable. They started by trading A.J. Minter and Freddy Peralta late last week, before trading Huascar Brazoban, Brooks Raley, and Luke Weaver in separate deals. The flurry of moves came to end with the Clay Holmes and Tyrone Taylor deal.
Holmes, for starters, joined the Mets in the 2025 offseason following three and half years with the New York Yankees. While playing at Citi Field, the veteran righty transitioned from a reliever into a full-time starter. This plan worked out for both sides, as he went 12–8 with a 3.53 ERA and 129 strikeouts in 31 outings.
Holmes continued to find success this season, with a 4–4 record in his first nine appearances with a 2.39 ERA and 45 strikeouts. Yet, Holmes’ productivity was cut short by a broken fibula sustained on May 15 against the Yankees. He has been sidelined for more than two months, but has slowly been progressing towards making his return.
Taylor, on the other hand, has always flown under the radar. His output was good to remain on the field, although not enough to be a regular starter. That was until he got into a rhythm during July, when he recorded 14 hits, six home runs and 12 RBI. He went yard in back-to-back games in addition to hitting another homer in his final outing with the Mets.
Due to the recent increase in output, the Mets dealt Taylor alongside Holmes to the Cubs, who sit in second place in the NL Central at 63–49.
Mets Acquire Rojas
To suffice for trading Holmes and Taylor, the Mets received Rojas, an infielder who can play shortstop, second and third base. As a member of Double-A Knoxville, he produced 93 hits, 19 doubles, 15 home runs and 57 RBI this season. In five minor league seasons, he also tallied 395 hits, 68 doubles, 40 home runs and 213 RBI.
