The New York Mets designated right-hander Chris Devenski for assignment before the start of Friday’s Subway Series opener against the New York Yankees at Yankee Stadium. Devenski, a former All-Star and 2017 World Series champion, struggled through six appearances with the Mets. In a corresponding move, the team recalled right-hander Jack Weisenburger, who made his major league debut earlier this year.
Roster Change
The Mets designated Devenski for assignment more than a week after he made his first appearance with them on August 30. The veteran reliever provided enough production during his first two outings of the regular season.
However, Chris Devenski struggled during his next four appearances. He surrendered eight hits, eight runs, all earned, two home runs and a pair of strikeouts. In his final appearance on Wednesday against the Miami Marlins, he gave up four hits, five earned runs, one home run and a walk.
Chris Devenski started the season with the Pittsburgh Pirates. He made three appearances, but struggled in two of them. He holds a 11.74 ERA. The numbers are much lower than what he was capable of producing during the start of his career with the Houston Astros. In 2017, he posted 100 strikeouts with a 2.68 ERA to help them win the World Series. He made his only All-Star appearance during that season.
Weisenburger Recalled
With an opening in the pitching staff, the Mets recalled Weisenburger to fill that void. He made his major league debut earlier on in the regular season and appeared in three outings. In those appearances, he surrendered three hits, two walks and an earned run. He totaled four strikeouts with a 2.08 ERA.
In 18 appearances at Triple-A Syracuse, Weisenburger recorded 53 strikeouts with a 6.68 ERA. In 62 innings, he gave up 59 hits, 46 earned runs and 34 walks. Still, his consistent command and control on the mound was enough for the Mets to recall him from Triple-A Syracuse.
