Diamondbacks vs. Royals Pregame — April 26, 2023

PHOENIX, Apr. 26 — It is Game Three of a three-game set between the Arizona Diamondbacks and Kansas City Royals, which is the final game of a seven-game homestand for the Diamondbacks. Zac Gallen will start for the Diamondbacks against Royals left-hander Ryan Yarbrough. Prior to the game, Royals manager Matt Quatraro met with the media on hand.

Matt Quatraro, Royals Manager

Quatraro said about Gallen, “The little bit that I’ve looked at him, it seems like he can do pretty much what he wants. (He can) pitch to a report, pitch to an opposing team. But above everything, he commands everything he has. So we’re gonna have to be consistent in what we’re looking for, where we’re looking for it and not miss it.”

The Royals, in 2022, were able to hit Gallen pretty well. When asked if that can help the Royals hitters in this game, Quatraro said, “I sure hope so. It doesn’t hurt for sure. If you have positive thoughts about what you’re doing, I think it always helps.”

Yarbrough “competes. He never he never backs down from anybody and is gonna throw strikes. He’s gonna make them beat him. If he’s on, as you guys have seen, he gets soft contact, early count swings, and makes them earn it.”

Salvador Perez “got beat up” yesterday by some foul balls and was hit by a pitch. He is not in the starting lineup, but this was a planned off-day anyway.

Royals Starter Ryan Yarbrough vs the Diamondbacks

Yarbrough is in his first season with the Royals after spending five with the Tampa Bay Rays. He has made seven appearances for the Royals this season, all in relief. His ERA is 7.62, but that is a small sample size, given that he has only pitched 13 innings. Since he was not named as the starter until Tuesday, the series preview did not look at his history against the Diamondbacks.

Yarbrough has never faced the Diamondbacks as a starter. Of the current Diamondbacks, three have faced him. Evan Longoria faced him in 2019 while with the San Francisco Giants and went 0-for-2. Gabriel Moreno faced him in 2022 while with the Toronto Blue Jays and went 0-for-2 with a walk, also grounding into a double play. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. played in Yarbrough’s division for five seasons. He is 8-for-32 with two doubles, a homer, four RBI, and six strikeouts.
