Cleveland Guardians
Cleveland Guardians right-hander Cal Quantrill is returning to the 15-day Injured List with shoulder inflammation, after two rough games. Due to injuries, the Guardians have been forced to roll with different rotations all season. Quantrill has already missed 26 games this season because of shoulder problems. On Wednesday, Quantrill allowed 11 hits, which is a career-high for him. He also allowed five runs in just over four innings against the Atlanta Braves. The Braves rattled off three homers in the game as well. Last week in a start against the Chicago Cubs, the Cubs scored six runs in just over three innings against Quantrill.
Turn to the Young Arms
With Quantrill’s absence, the Guardians have recalled Cody Morris from Triple-A Columbus to fill the void. Morris missed the start of the season, also with a shoulder injury. Along with Quantrill’s injury, starting pitcher Triston McKenzie is also back on the IL for three weeks, due to an elbow sprain. The Guardians’ bullpen has been held down by rookies Gavin Williams, Tanner Bibee, and Logan Allen, in light of all the injuries since the start of the season. Allen was just recently sent back down to the minors.
Current Pitching State
With Quantrill’s injury, it makes the Guardians’ trade deadline plans tricky. The trade deadline falls on August 1. There has been speculation that 2020 Cy Young winner Shane Bieber could be on the move to add some bats, although guys like Andres Gimenez (.247 BA) and Josh Naylor (.295 BA) have been heating up. The trade deadline will be here before we know it. The Guardians will either have to hope Quantrill and McKenzie can return to form, or they’ll have to bank on the young arms. With these injuries, it seems less and less likely that the Guardians will move Bieber within the next few weeks.
