In an effort to further bolster their pitching staff, the Texas Rangers signed free agent left-hander Andrew Heaney on Tuesday. The signing took place at the Winter Meetings, which are currently being held in San Diego, California. The deal is pending a physical. The news of his signing was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic. This means that the Rangers will have their entire starting rotation assembled two months before pitchers and catchers are expected to report to spring training. This is indeed a scenario that does not occur very often. It is a safe bet that it is a problem that new manager Bruce Bochy is more than happy to have.

Andrew Heaney Deal Specifics

The contract that Andrew Heaney has in place with the Rangers is for $25 million over two years. He also has an opt-out clause. Heaney also has the potential to make $37 million on this deal. There is another $12 million in incentives built into the framework of the pact. The Rangers are hoping to see a resurgence from Heaney in 2023. In his 2022 campaign, the lefty pitched just 72 2/3 innings. He was put on the Injured List on multiple occasions last year with shoulder problems.

Heaney did, however, have his dominant moments when he was healthy in 2022. He finished with personal bests in ERA (3.10), WHIP (1.09), K/9 (13.6) and K/BB ratio (5.79) for the Los Angeles Dodgers. This was just after he a 5.83 ERA over 129 2/3 innings for the Los Angeles Angels and New York Yankees in 2021, after which Heaney signed a one-year, $8.5 million deal with the Dodgers.

Rangers Rotation

Andrew Heaney will be joining a rather formidable starting rotation in 2023. As it stands at the moment, the Rangers will go into the 2023 season with a rotation that consists of Heaney alongside the newly signed Jacob deGrom. Jon Gray, Martín Pérez, and Jake Odorizzi will make up the rest of the starting five. Rangers fans are looking forward to seeing how this surge of off-season momentum will play out for the Rangers in the 2023 season. So far, they are making the statement that their goal is to win.
