After the conclusion of their 2026 season, the New York Mets have begun to reshape the coaching staff of manager Andy Green. The team announced the dismissal of director of hitting Jeff Albert while retaining hitting coach Troy Snitker and assistant Rafael Fernandez on October 6. Recent reports indicate that the club is interested in speaking with Chicago Cubs assistant hitting coach John Mallee about an opening on the staff. They are also going to speak with Kevin Long about another position.

The moves come after President of Baseball Operations David Stearns said in his final press conference of the season that he plans on speaking with Green about the coaching staff. Stearns has also made some additions to the Mets front office with the hiring of senior advisor Derek Falvey and assistant general manager Kris Gross.

“Andy and I are going to have conversations on that this week and we’ll get to a decision point here over the next week,” Stearns said on September 28.

Coaching Staff Changes

After finishing with the worst record in the NL East at 74–88, the Mets began to change their coaching staff. That started with the removal of Albert, who joined the organization in 2022 as director of hitting development. He joined the staff of the major league club following the 2025 season.

The Mets also parted ways with assurance coach Danny Barnes and batting practice pitcher Kevin Mahoney, who could still return to the organization in different roles. At the same time, they retained Snitker and Fernandez. Additionally, bench coach Kai Correa and pitching coach Justin Willard are still part of Greens’ staff.

Showing Interest

The Mets have interest in speaking with Mallee about a position with the coaching staff after he helped the Cubs improve upon their numbers. With guidance from Mallee and hitting coach Dustin Kelly, the Cubs led the league in OPS (.767), slugging percentage (.428), RBI (804) and runs (850). The pair also played a role in outfielder Pete Crow-Armstrong developing into a NL MVP candidate.

Malle spent the past three seasons with the Cubs and previously served as hitting coach for the Houston Astros and Philadelphia Phillies. He was once the Cubs hitting coach from 2015–2017 while also serving as the Los Angeles Angeles assistant hitting coach.

The Mets are also expected to speak with Long, who was the Phillies’ hitting coach from 2022–26. He was the Mets former hitting coach from 2015–2017. He also served as the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals hitting coach as both teams won World Series titles in 2009 and 2019 with him on the staff.
