Michael Brantley Re-signs with Astros: One Year, $12 million

Five-time All-Star left fielder Michael Brantley has re-signed with the Houston Astros, according to Ken Rosenthal and Robert Murray. The deal is for one year and is worth $12 million. It is pending a physical.

Michael Brantley and His Stint with the Astros

Brantley, 35, signed with the Astros in 2019 after spending ten seasons with the then-Cleveland Indians. In his first season in Houston, he helped the Astros to the World Series, where they lost to the Washington Nationals in seven games. Two seasons later, he helped them back to the Series, where they lost to the Atlanta Braves. Overall with the Astros, he has slashed .306/.368/.464 (446-for-1457) with 98 doubles, six triples, 40 home runs, 185 RBI, 132 walks, 177 strikeouts, a .356 wOBA, 53.7 wRAA, and 208 runs scored. He made the All-Star teams in 2019 and 2021.

Defensively, he has made 252 appearances in left field since joining the Astros. He has also made 117 appearances as the designated hitter and 17 in right field. As a left fielder, he has been a decent defender, with four Total Zone Runs Above Average (Rtot on Baseball Reference) and 19 Defensive Runs Saved (Rdrs).

Brantley only played 64 games in 2022. His season ended in August, when he had shoulder surgery. The surgery was to repair a labrum tear he suffered in June 26, when he played his last game of the season.

Outlook

This contract makes Michael Brantley number six on the Astros in 2023 salary. Ahead of him are third baseman Alex Bregman ($30.17 million), second baseman Jose Altuve ($29 million), first baseman Jose Abreu ($19.5 million), righty Lance McCullers ($15.83 million), and closer Ryan Pressly ($14 million). Of the six, only Altuve and McCullers have a full no-trade clause, while Bregman has a modified one. The Astros have four other veterans under contract and eight players who are arbitration-eligible. Designated hitter Yordan Alvarez, catcher Martin Maldonado, and relievers Rafael Montero and Hector Neris are the veterans under contract. The arbitration-eligible players are lefty Framber Valdez, right fielder Kyle Tucker, reliever Ryne Stanek, righty Jose Urquidy, reliever Phil Maton, righty Cristian Javier, and center fielder Mauricio Dubon.
