The Boston Red Sox have fired Alex Cora effective immediately after a 17–1 win over the Baltimore Orioles. To go with it, the Red Sox let go of hitting coach Peter Fatse, bench coach Ramon Vazquez, third base coach Kyle Hudson and game-planning coach Jason Varitek. The Red Sox currently stand at 10–17 and are in last place in the American League East, despite having high expectations entering the year.
Cora’s Managing History
Cora became manager of the Red Sox after the 2017 season, taking over for John Farrell. The very next year, the Red Sox won the World Series over the Los Angeles Dodgers in five games. However, after that title, the Red Sox made the playoffs in only two of Cora’s next seven seasons as manager. Those coming in 2021 and 2025.
His Replacement
The Boston Red Sox are handing the keys over to Chad Tracy, per Bob Nightengale of USA Today. Tracy, a former major leaguer in his own right, played for nine major league seasons with four different teams. As of late, he was in the midst of his fifth season as the manager of the Worcester WooSox, the Red Sox Triple-A affiliate. Chad Epperson, the manager of the Double–A Portland Sea Dogs, will take over as the third base coach. Collin Hetzler, Tracy’s hitting coach, will serve in the same role with the Red Sox.
Looking Ahead
The Red Sox will look to salvage what may already be a lost season, despite there being so much time left. However, the Red Sox rose above early season struggles last year. Especially after Rafael Devers got traded to the San Francisco Giants.
